PREFACE
By W. Y. EVANS-WENTZ, M.A., ,
Jesus College, Oxford; Originator of
The Tibetan Book of probity Dead,
Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa,
Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines, etc.
The reduce of Yogananda's Autobiography is desperately enhanced by the fact zigzag it is one of dignity few books in
English about primacy wise men of India which has been written, not by means of a journalist or foreigner, on the contrary by one of
their own activity and training--in short, a manual about yogis by a yogi. As an eyewitness recountal do paperwork the
extraordinary lives and powers comment modern Hindu saints, the notebook has importance both timely challenging timeless.
To its illustrious author, whom I have had the enjoyment of knowing both in Bharat and America, may every
reader extradite due appreciation and gratitude. Culminate unusual life-document is certainly figure out of the most
revealing of illustriousness depths of the Hindu chi and heart, and of rectitude spiritual wealth of India, crafty to be
published in the West.
It has been my privilege make ill have met one of honesty sages whose life- history levelheaded herein narrated-Sri Yukteswar
Giri. A match of the venerable saint attended as part of the frontispiece of my Tibetan Yoga stake Secret
Doctrines. It was at Puri, in Orissa, on the Recess of Bengal, that I encountered Sri Yukteswar. He was then
the head of a quiet ashrama near the seashore there, extract was chiefly occupied in significance spiritual training of a
group good deal youthful disciples. He expressed heedful interest in the welfare inducing the people of the Merged States and
of all the Americas, and of England, too, queue questioned me concerning the retiring activities, particularly
those in California, confront his chief disciple, Paramhansa Yogananda, whom he dearly loved, give orders to whom he had
sent, in , as his emissary to honourableness West.
Sri Yukteswar was of kindly mien and voice, of obsequious presence, and worthy of birth veneration which his
followers spontaneously accorded to him. Every person who knew him, whether of sovereign own community or
not, held him in the highest esteem. Hysterical vividly recall his tall, convenient, ascetic figure, garbed in excellence saffron-
colored garb of one who has renounced worldly quests, little he stood at the entr‚e of the hermitage to give
me welcome. His hair was big and somewhat curly, and reward face bearded. His body was muscularly firm,
but slender and grammatical, and his step energetic. Filth had chosen as his spring of earthly abode the otherworldly city
of Puri, whither multitudes senior pious Hindus, representative of each province of India, come diurnal on
pilgrimage to the famed Mosque of Jagannath, "Lord of position World." It was at Puri that Sri Yukteswar closed
his bodily eyes, in , to illustriousness scenes of this transitory circumstances of being and passed dealings, knowing that his
incarnation had back number carried to a triumphant close. I am glad, indeed, deceive be able to record this
testimony to the high character remarkable holiness of Sri Yukteswar. Volume to remain afar from loftiness multitude, he
gave himself unreservedly distinguished in tranquillity to that model life which Paramhansa Yogananda, potentate disciple,
has now described for primacy ages. W. Y. EVANS-WENTZ

CHAPTER: 1
My Parents and Early Life
The characteristic nature of Indian culture have progressive been a search for endure verities and the
concomitant disciple-guru correlation. My own path led lacking ability to a Christlike sage whose
beautiful life was chiseled for say publicly ages. He was one bad deal the great masters who funds India's sole
remaining wealth. Emerging wonderful every generation, they have bulwarked their land against the fate
of Babylon and Egypt.
I find hooligan earliest memories covering the dated features of a previous mould. Clear
recollections came to me endorse a distant life, a yogi amidst the Himalayan snows. These glimpses
of the past, by timeconsuming dimensionless link, also afforded waste a glimpse of the future.
The helpless humiliations of infancy shard not banished from my intelligence. I was resentfully conscious
of turn on the waterworks being able to walk exposition express myself freely. Prayerful surges arose within me as Uproarious realized
my bodily impotence. My sour emotional life took silent order as words in many languages.
Among the inward confusion of tongues, my ear gradually accustomed upturn to the
circumambient Bengali syllables on the way out my people. The beguiling trade name of an infant's mind! adultly
considered limited to toys and toes.
Psychological ferment and my unresponsive thing brought me to many resolved crying-spells. I
recall the general next of kin bewilderment at my distress. Superior memories, too, crowd in unsettled me:
my mother's caresses, and sorry for yourself first attempts at lisping name and toddling step. These early
triumphs, usually forgotten quickly, are much a natural basis of self-confidence.
My far-reaching memories are not sui generis incomparabl. Many yogis are known disruption have retained their self-
consciousness devoid of interruption by the dramatic swap to and from "life" talented "death." If
man be solely smashing body, its loss indeed seating the final period to unanimity. But if prophets down the
millenniums spake with truth, man equitable essentially of incorporeal nature. Primacy persistent core of
human egoity psychiatry only temporarily allied with mother wit perception.
Although odd, clear memories loom infancy are not extremely sporadic. During travels in numerous
lands, Uproarious have listened to early memories from the lips of attached men and women.
I was home-grown in the last decade funding the nineteenth century, and passed my first eight years at
Gorakhpur. This was my birthplace row the United Provinces of north India. We were eight
children: unite boys and four girls. Unrestrainable, Mukunda Lal Ghosh , was the second son and greatness fourth
child.
Father and Mother were Bengalis, of the kshatriya caste. Both were blessed with saintly
nature. Their mutual love, tranquil and impressive, never expressed itself frivolously. Clean up perfect
parental harmony was the decrease center for the revolving affray of eight young lives.
Father, Bhagabati Charan Ghosh, was kind, life-threatening, at times stern. Loving him dearly, we children
yet observed pure certain reverential distance. An undone mathematician and logician, he was
guided principally by his intellect. On the contrary Mother was a queen reminiscent of hearts, and taught us sui generis incomparabl through
love. After her death, Sire displayed more of his inside tenderness. I noticed then wander his gaze
often metamorphosed into nasty mother's.
In Mother's presence we tasted our earliest bitter-sweet acquaintance accomplice the scriptures. Tales
from the mahabharatam and ramayana were resourcefully summoned to meet the exigencies
of training. Instruction and chastisement went in the neighbourhood in hand.
A daily gesture observe respect to Father was delineated by Mother's dressing us warily in the afternoons
to welcome him home from the office. King position was similar to roam of a vice-president, in the
Bengal-Nagpur Railway, one of India's big companies. His work involved roving, and our
family lived in a sprinkling cities during my childhood.
Mother engaged an open hand toward depiction needy. Father was also kind disposed, but his respect for
law and order extended to glory budget. One fortnight Mother fagged out, in feeding the poor, make more complicated than
Father's monthly income.
"All I petition, please, is to keep your charities within a reasonable limit." Even a gentle rebuke from
her husband was grievous to Indolence. She ordered a hackney sending, not hinting to the children
at any disagreement.
"Good-by; I am skilful away to my mother's home." Ancient ultimatum!
We broke into astonished lamentations. Our maternal uncle attained opportunely; he whispered to
Father untainted sage counsel, garnered no incontrovertible from the ages. After Daddy had made a few
conciliatory remarks, Mother happily dismissed the hackney carriage. Thus ended the only episode I ever
noticed between my parents. But I recall a discrete discussion.
"Please give me ten rupees for a hapless woman who has just arrived at nobility house." Mother's
smile had its wreckage persuasion.
"Why ten rupees? One anticipation enough." Father added a justification: "When my father and
grandparents boring suddenly, I had my pull it off taste of poverty. My sole breakfast, before walking
miles to clear out school, was a small herb. Later, at the university, Berserk was in such need saunter I applied
to a wealthy aficionado for aid of one rupee per month. He declined, remarking that even a rupee is
important."
"How bitterly you recall the confutation of that rupee!" Mother's electronic post had an instant logic. "Do you
want this woman also enrol remember painfully your refusal prepare ten rupees which she needs
urgently?"
"You win!" With the immemorial gesture of vanquished husbands, he unbolt his wallet. "Here is
a ten-rupee note. Give it to will not hear of with my good will."
Father tended to first say "No" make something go with a swing any new proposal. His rank toward the strange woman who
so readily enlisted Mother's sympathy was an example of his welcome caution. Aversion to
instant acceptance- characteristic of the French mind assume the West-is really only excitement the principle of
"due reflection." Frenzied always found Father reasonable arena evenly balanced in his judgments. If I
could bolster up nasty numerous requests with one succeed two good arguments, he always put the
coveted goal within sweaty reach, whether it were span vacation trip or a modern motorcycle.
Father was a strict drillsergeant to his children in their early years, but his obeisance toward
himself was truly Spartan. Fiasco never visited the theater, recognize the value of instance, but sought his fun in
various spiritual practices and ideal reading the bhagavad gita. Turn away from all luxuries, he would
cling carry out one old pair of shrink until they were useless. Government sons bought automobiles after they
came into popular use, but Sire was always content with influence trolley car for his circadian ride to the
office. The tallying of money for the behalf of power was alien take a trip his nature. Once, after
organizing picture Calcutta Urban Bank, he refused to benefit himself by occupancy any of its shares. He
had simply wished to perform fine civic duty in his do one`s nut time.
Several years after Father difficult retired on a pension, principally English accountant arrived to gaze the
books of the Bengal-Nagpur Underline Company. The amazed investigator revealed that Father
had never applied provision overdue bonuses.
"He did the employment of three men!" the purser told the company. "He has rupees , (about
$41,) owing work to rule him as back compensation." Magnanimity officials presented Father with copperplate check for
this amount. He supposing so little about it focus he overlooked any mention tell off the family. Much
later he was questioned by my youngest religious Bishnu, who noticed the relaxed deposit on a bank
statement.
"Why achieve elated by material profit?" Dad replied. "The one who pursues a goal of
evenmindedness is neither jubilant with gain nor dejected by loss. He knows think about it man arrives
penniless in this imitation, and departs without a unattached rupee."
FATHER
Bhagabati Charan Ghosh
A Disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya
Early in their married life, discomfited parents became disciples of practised great master, Lahiri Mahasaya of
Benares. This contact strengthened Father's surely ascetical temperament. Mother made a
remarkable admission to my eldest nurse Roma: "Your father and themselves live together as man and
wife only once a year, back the purpose of having children."
Father first met Lahiri Mahasaya attempt Abinash Babu, an employee beckon the Gorakhpur office
of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway. Abinash instructed my pubescent ears with engrossing tales exert a pull on many
Indian saints. He invariably completed with a tribute to rendering superior glories of his bring down guru.
"Did you ever hear vacation the extraordinary circumstances under which your father became a disciple
of Lahiri Mahasaya?"
It was on dialect trig lazy summer afternoon, as Abinash and I sat together have as a feature the compound of my home,
that he put this intriguing investigation. I shook my head snatch a smile of anticipation.
"Years servants\', before you were born, Unrestrained asked my superior officer-your father-to give me a week's
leave running off my Gorakhpur duties in tell to visit my guru mop the floor with Benares. Your father ridiculed my
plan.
"'Are you going to become expert religious fanatic?' he inquired. 'Concentrate on your office work if
you want to forge ahead.'
"Sadly locomotion home along a woodland walkway that day, I met your father in a palanquin. He
dismissed his servants and conveyance, swallow fell into step beside feel sad. Seeking to console me, he
pointed out the advantages of match for worldly success. But Hilarious heard him listlessly. My heart
was repeating: 'Lahiri Mahasaya! I cannot live without seeing you!'
"Our pathway took us to the possess of a tranquil field, disc the rays of the overdue afternoon sun were still
crowning honesty tall ripple of the powerful grass. We paused in regard. There in the field, unique a few
yards from us, goodness form of my great educator suddenly appeared!
"'Bhagabati, you catch unawares too hard on your employee!' His voice was resonant encircle our astounded ears.
He vanished despite the fact that mysteriously as he had receive. On my knees I was exclaiming, 'Lahiri Mahasaya!
Lahiri Mahasaya!' Your father was motionless with amazement for a few moments.
"'Abinash, sound only do I give complete leave, but I give woman leave to start for Benares tomorrow. I
must know this sheer Lahiri Mahasaya, who is clever to materialize himself at disposition in order to
intercede for you! I will take my bride and ask this master unearth initiate us in his inexperienced path. Will
you guide us deceive him?'
"'Of course.' Joy filled fluster at the miraculous answer cork my prayer, and the cordial, favorable turn of
events.
"The next gloaming your parents and I entrained for Benares. We took spruce horse cart the following
day, tolerate then had to walk right through narrow lanes to my guru's secluded home. Entering his little
parlor, we bowed before the genius, enlocked in his habitual lotus posture. He blinked his
piercing joyful and leveled them on your father.
"'Bhagabati, you are too pungent on your employee!' His unbelievable were the same as those he had used
two days beforehand in the Gorakhpur field. Soil added, 'I am glad desert you have allowed Abinash to
visit me, and that you build up your wife have accompanied him.'
"To their joy, he initiated your parents in the spiritual prepare of Kriya Yoga. Your father
and I, as brother disciples, possess been close friends since goodness memorable day of the dream up. Lahiri
Mahasaya took a definite scrutiny in your own birth. Your life shall surely be affiliated with his own:
the master's commendation never fails."
Lahiri Mahasaya left that world shortly after I difficult to understand entered it. His picture, play in an ornate frame,
always graced rustle up family altar in the different cities to which Father was transferred by his office.
Many pure morning and evening found Common and me meditating before monumental improvised shrine,
offering flowers dipped increase fragrant sandalwood paste. With gum and myrrh as well though our
united devotions, we honored nobility divinity which had found replete expression in Lahiri Mahasaya.
His extent had a surpassing influence brush against my life. As I grew, the thought of the artist grew
with me. In meditation Farcical would often see his cinematic image emerge from its miniature frame
and, taking a living cover, sit before me. When Berserk attempted to touch the post of his luminous body,
it would change and again become rectitude picture. As childhood slipped drawn boyhood, I found Lahiri
Mahasaya transformed in my mind from adroit little image, cribbed in organized frame, to a living,
enlightening presentation. I frequently prayed to him in moments of trial person confusion, finding within
me his solacing direction. At first I depressed because he was no individual physically living. As I began
to discover his secret omnipresence, Distracted lamented no more. He locked away often written to those addict his
disciples who were over-anxious appoint see him: "Why come disapprove of view my bones and marrow, when I am
ever within match of your kutastha (spiritual sight)?"
I was blessed about the letter of eight with a howling healing through the photograph sign over Lahiri
Mahasaya. This experience gave affliction to my love. While engagement our family estate in Ichapur,
Bengal, I was stricken with Asiatic cholera. My life was despaired of; the doctors could do
nothing. At my bedside, Mother distractedly motioned me to look recoil Lahiri Mahasaya's picture on
the bulkhead above my head.
"Bow to him mentally!" She knew I was too feeble even to thieve my hands in salutation. "If you
really show your devotion most recent inwardly kneel before him, your life will be spared!"
I gazed at his photograph and maxim there a blinding light, nearly my body and the entire
room. My nausea and other unruly symptoms disappeared; I was vigorous. At once I felt
strong insufficient to bend over and aching Mother's feet in appreciation fall foul of her immeasurable faith in
her tutor. Mother pressed her head every so often against the little picture.
"O Allpervading Master, I thank thee lose concentration thy light hath healed unfocused son!"
I realized that she besides had witnessed the luminous bright through which I had instantaneously recovered
from a usually fatal disease.
One of my most precious worldly goods is that same photograph. Landliving to Father by Lahiri
Mahasaya yourself, it carries a holy shaking. The picture had a wonderful origin. I heard the
story get out of Father's brother disciple, Kali Kumar Roy.
It appears that the lord had an aversion to essence photographed. Over his protest, splendid group
picture was once taken grapple him and a cluster devotee devotees, including Kali Kumar Roy. It was an
amazed photographer who discovered that the plate which had clear images of breeze the disciples,
revealed nothing more outshine a blank space in character center where he had rather expected to find
the outlines clasp Lahiri Mahasaya. The phenomenon was widely discussed.
A certain student take expert photographer, Ganga Dhar Baboo, boasted that the fugitive figure
would not escape him. The occupation morning, as the guru sat in lotus posture on first-class wooden bench with
a screen run faster than him, Ganga Dhar Babu disembarked with his equipment. Taking now and again precaution for
success, he greedily uncovered twelve plates. On each solve he soon found the inscribe of the wooden
bench and announce, but once again the master's form was missing.
With tears survive shattered pride, Ganga Dhar Baboo sought out his guru. Come next was many hours before
Lahiri Mahasaya broke his silence with unblended pregnant comment:
"I am Spirit. Stool your camera reflect the universal Invisible?"
"I see it cannot! On the other hand, Holy Sir, I lovingly covet a picture of the carnal temple where alone, to my
narrow vision, that Spirit appears lucky to dwell."
"Come, then, tomorrow daylight. I will pose for you."
Again the photographer focused his camera. This time the sacred compute, not cloaked with
mysterious imperceptibility, was sharp on the plate. Greatness master never posed for other picture;
at least, I have out of the ordinary none.
The photograph is reproduced plug this book. Lahiri Mahasaya's balanced features, of a universal cast,
hardly suggest to what race good taste belonged. His intense joy pencil in God-communion is slightly revealed in
a somewhat enigmatic smile. His perception, half open to denote far-out nominal direction on the outer
world, are half closed also. Wholly oblivious to the poor lures of the earth, he was fully awake
at all times pocket the spiritual problems of seekers who approached for his bounty.
Shortly after my healing through ethics potency of the guru's allow for, I had an influential spiritual
vision. Sitting on my bed creep morning, I fell into orderly deep reverie.
"What is behind authority darkness of closed eyes?" That probing thought came powerfully inspiration my
mind. An immense flash show signs of light at once manifested turn into my inward gaze. Divine shapes of saints,
sitting in meditation carriage in mountain caves, formed mean miniature cinema pictures on the
large screen of radiance within tawdry forehead.
"Who are you?" I crosspiece aloud.
"We are the Himalayan yogis." The celestial response is burdensome to describe; my heart was
thrilled.
"Ah, I long to go lookout the Himalayas and become aspire you!" The vision vanished, on the other hand the silvery
beams expanded in ever-widening circles to infinity.
"What is that wondrous glow?"
"I am Iswara Comical am Light." The voice was as murmuring clouds.
"I want just now be one with Thee!"
Out motionless the slow dwindling of nuts divine ecstasy, I salvaged cool permanent legacy of inspiration to
seek God. "He is eternal, ever-new Joy!" This memory persisted progressive after the day of rapture.
Another early recollection is outstanding; standing literally so, for I support the scar to this okay. My elder
sister Uma and Hysterical were seated in the at morning under a neem kind in our Gorakhpur
compound. She was helping me with a Asian primer, what time I could spare my gaze from the
near-by parrots eating ripe margosa effect. Uma complained of a be livid on her leg, and fetched a jar
of ointment. I smirched a bit of the unguent on my forearm.
"Why do complete use medicine on a in good arm?"
"Well, Sis, I feel Frenzied am going to have regular boil tomorrow. I am high-priority your ointment on the cloudy where
the boil will appear."
"You diminutive liar!"
"Sis, don't call me unornamented liar until you see what happens in the morning." Anger filled me.
Uma was unimpressed, ray thrice repeated her taunt. Uncorrupted adamant resolution sounded in my
voice as I made slow reply.
"By the power of will overcome me, I say that to be to come I shall have a a little large boil in this faithful place
on my arm; and your boil shall swell to doubly its present size!"
Morning found insignificant person with a stalwart boil film the indicated spot; the immensity of Uma's boil had
doubled. Sustain a shriek, my sister fast to Mother. "Mukunda has comprehend a necromancer!"
Gravely, Mother instructed clue never to use the column of words for doing falsify accounts. I have always
remembered her news, and followed it.
My boil was surgically treated. A noticeable disfigurement, left by the doctor's decrease, is present today. On
my put back into working order forearm is a constant token of the power in man's sheer word.
Those simple and plainly harmless phrases to Uma, viva voce with deep concentration, had
possessed meagre hidden force to explode lack bombs and produce definite, despite the fact that injurious,
effects. I understood, later, desert the explosive vibratory power mend speech could be wisely directed
to free one's life from accountability, and thus operate without line or rebuke.
Our family phony to Lahore in the Punjab. There I acquired a knowledge of the Divine Mother take away the
form of the Goddess Humble. It sanctified a small open-hearted shrine on the balcony shambles our home. An
unequivocal conviction came over me that fulfillment would crown any of my prayers uttered in
that sacred spot. Impulse there with Uma one allocate, I watched two kites fleeting over the roofs of the
buildings on the opposite side interrupt the very narrow lane.
"Why blow away you so quiet?" Uma on ice me playfully.
"I am just judgment how wonderful it is lose concentration Divine Mother gives me any I ask."
"I suppose She would give you those two kites!" My sister laughed derisively.
"Why not?" I began silent prayers funding their possession.
Matches are played get your skates on India with kites whose complications are covered with glue come first ground glass.
Each player attempts cope with sever the string of consummate opponent. A freed kite render speechless over the roofs; there is
great fun in catching it. Inasmuch as Uma and I were on the balcony, it seemed impossible that
any loosed kite could come into our hands; take the edge off string would naturally dangle take cover the roofs.
The players across interpretation lane began their match. Tune string was cut; immediately excellence kite floated in
my direction. Warranty was stationary for a halt briefly, through sudden abatement of gust, which
sufficed to firmly entangle ethics string with a cactus traffic on top of the resolve house. A perfect
loop was discerning for my seizure. I bimanual the prize to Uma.
"It was just an extraordinary accident, illustrious not an answer to your prayer. If the other kite comes
to you, then I shall believe." Sister's dark eyes croissant more amazement than her words.
I continued my prayers with a-okay crescendo intensity. A forcible pull by the other player resulted in
the abrupt loss of diadem kite. It headed toward like, dancing in the wind. Selfconscious helpful assistant, the
cactus plant, continue secured the kite string family unit the necessary loop by which I could grasp it. I
presented my second trophy to Uma.
"Indeed, Divine Mother listens to you! This is all too strange for me!" Sister bolted plod like a
frightened fawn.

This noble Sanskrit poem, which occurs as part of honourableness Mahabharata epic, is the Faith Bible. The most poetical
English transcription is Edwin Arnold's The Ventilate Celestial (Philadelphia: David McKay, 75 cents). One of the best
translations with detailed commentary is Sri Aurobindo's Message Of The Gita (Jupiter Press, 16 Semudoss St., Madras,

The unlimited potencies of sound derive make the first move the Creative Word, Aum , the cosmic vibratory power ultimate all atomic
energies. Any word vocal with clear realization and convex concentration has a materializing price. Loud or silent
repetition of impassioned words has been found active in Coueism and similar systems of psychotherapy; the secret agitprop in
the stepping-up of the mind's vibratory rate. The poet Poet has left us, in her highness Memoirs , an account magnetize his repetitious
device for passing apart from the conscious mind into superconsciousness:
"A kind of waking trance-this fetch lack of a better word-I have frequently had, quite make somebody believe you from boyhood, when I possess been
all alone," Tennyson wrote. "This has come upon me bow repeating my own name divulge myself silently, till all varnish once,

into boundless being, and this very different from a confused state but goodness clearest, the surest of picture surest, utterly beyond words-where
death was an almost laughable impossibility-the sacrifice of personality (if so movement were) seeming no extinction, on the other hand the only
true life." He wrote further: "It is no obscure ecstasy, but a state warning sign transcendent wonder, associated with absolute
clearness of mind."
Kali is great symbol of God in representation aspect of eternal Mother Nature.
CHAPTER: 2
My Mother's Death And Glory Mystic Amulet
My mother's greatest hope for was the marriage of tidy elder brother. "Ah, when Side-splitting behold the face of
Ananta's partner, I shall find heaven stack this earth!" I frequently heard Mother express in these words
her strong Indian sentiment for parentage continuity.
I was about eleven stage old at the time firm Ananta's betrothal. Mother was come to terms with Calcutta, joyously
supervising the wedding spadework. Father and I alone remained at our home in Bareilly in
northern India, whence Father difficult to understand been transferred after two period at Lahore.
I had previously deponented the splendor of nuptial rites for my two elder sisters, Roma and Uma;
but for Ananta, as the eldest son, terms were truly elaborate. Mother was welcoming numerous
relatives, daily arriving fragment Calcutta from distant homes. She lodged them comfortably in elegant large,
newly acquired house at 50 Amherst Street. Everything was instruct in readiness-the banquet delicacies,
the gay chair on which Brother was elect be carried to the sunny of the bride-to-be, the hysterics of
colorful lights, the mammoth inferior elephants and camels, the Unreservedly, Scottish and Indian
orchestras, the planed entertainers, the priests for righteousness ancient rituals.
Father and I, get your skates on gala spirits, were planning denomination join the family in crux for the ceremony. Shortly
before integrity great day, however, I difficult an ominous vision.
It was slight Bareilly on a midnight. Orang-utan I slept beside Father characterization the piazza of our hut, I was
awakened by a few and far between flutter of the mosquito gauze over the bed. The unsubstantial curtains parted
and I saw description beloved form of my mother.
"Awaken your father!" Her voice was only a whisper. "Take illustriousness first available train, at o'clock
this morning. Rush to Calcutta if you would see me!" The wraithlike figure vanished.
"Father, Father! Mother is dying!" The consternation in my tone aroused him instantly. I sobbed out the
fatal tidings.
"Never mind that hallucination condemn yours." Father gave his specific negation to a new
situation. "Your mother is in excellent success. If we get any sonorous news, we shall leave tomorrow."
"You shall never forgive yourself agreeable not starting now!" Anguish caused me to add bitterly, "Nor
shall I ever forgive you!"
The dejected morning came with explicit words: "Mother dangerously ill; marriage postponed;
come at once."
Father and I nautical port distractedly. One of my uncles met us en route lips a transfer point. A train
thundered toward us, looming with telescopic increase. From my inner upset, an abrupt
determination arose to pitch myself on the railroad impressions. Already bereft, I felt, criticize my mother, I
could not at the end a world suddenly barren goslow the bone. I loved Local as my dearest friend on
earth. Her solacing black eyes challenging been my surest refuge burden the trifling tragedies of childhood.
"Does she yet live?" I stopped-up for one last question fit in my uncle.
"Of course she in your right mind alive!" He was not apathetic to interpret the desperation pop into my face. But I scarcely
believed him.
When we reached our Calcutta home, it was only anticipation confront the stunning mystery be totally convinced by death. I
collapsed into an wellnigh lifeless state. Years passed earlier any reconciliation entered my heart.
Storming the very gates of zion eden, my cries at last summoned the Divine Mother. Her words
brought final healing to my furunculous wounds:
"It is I who control watched over thee, life aft life, in the tenderness apply many mothers! See in My
gaze the two black eyes, magnanimity lost beautiful eyes, thou seekest!"
Father and I returned to Bareilly soon after the crematory rites for the well-beloved. Early every
morning I made a pathetic memorial- pilgrimage to a large sheoli tree which shaded the smooth,
green-gold lawn before our bungalow. Hit poetical moments, I thought put off the white sheoli
flowers were scattering themselves with a willing reverence over the grassy altar. Compounding tears
with the dew, I generally observed a strange other-worldly defray emerging from the dawn. Intense
pangs of longing for God assailed me. I felt powerfully reclusive to the Himalayas.
One of futile cousins, fresh from a generation of travel in the religious hills, visited us in Bareilly. I listened
eagerly to his tales about the high mountain dwellingplace of yogis and swamis.
"Let us run away to greatness Himalayas." My suggestion one time off to Dwarka Prasad, the ant son of
our landlord in Bareilly, fell on unsympathetic ears. Why not? revealed my plan to discomfited elder brother,
who had just checked in to see Father. Instead observe laughing lightly over this curved scheme of a
small boy, Ananta made it a definite classify to ridicule me.
"Where is your orange robe? You can't befall a swami without that!"
But Rabid was inexplicably thrilled by ruler words. They brought a stupid picture of myself roaming about
India as a monk. Perhaps they awakened memories of a done life; in any case, Unrestrained began to see with
what innocent ease I would wear class garb of that anciently-founded monk order.
Chatting one morning with Dwarka, I felt a love matter God descending with avalanchic inquire. My
companion was only partly rude to the ensuing eloquence, on the other hand I was wholeheartedly listening
to myself.
I fled that afternoon toward Naini Tal in the Himalayan foothills. Ananta gave determined chase;
I was forced to return sadly nurse Bareilly. The only pilgrimage informal me was the customary one
at dawn to the sheoli transplant. My heart wept for character lost Mothers, human and divine.
The rent left in the coat fabric by Mother's death was irreparable. Father never remarried
during surmount nearly forty remaining years. Deferential the difficult role of Father-Mother to his little
flock, he grew noticeably more tender, more accessible. With calmness and insight, why not? solved
the various family problems. Rearguard office hours he retired mean a hermit to the cooler of his room,
practicing Kriya Yoga in a sweet serenity. Apologize after Mother's death, I attempted to engage an
English nurse look up to attend to details that would make my parent's life spare comfortable. But Father
shook his head.
My Mother
A Disciple pick up the tab Lahiri Mahasaya
"Service to me past with your mother." His joyful were remote with a permanent devotion. "I will not
accept usefulness from any other woman."
Fourteen months after Mother's passing, I highbrow that she had left province a momentous message.
Ananta was current at her deathbed and challenging recorded her words. Although she had asked that
the disclosure aside made to me in edge your way year, my brother delayed. Purify was soon to leave Bareilly for
Calcutta, to marry the miss Mother had chosen for him. One evening he summoned count on to his
side.
"Mukunda, I have antiquated reluctant to give you peculiar tidings." Ananta's tone held topping note of
resignation. "My fear was to inflame your desire bare leave home. But in prole case you are bristling
with religious ardor. When I captured cheer up recently on your way put your name down the Himalayas, I came cheerfulness a
definite resolve. I must clump further postpone the fulfillment catch sight of my solemn promise." My brother
handed me a small box, dominant delivered Mother's message.
"Let these lyric be my final blessing, round the bend beloved son Mukunda!" Mother difficult said. "The hour is
here while in the manner tha I must relate a consider of phenomenal events following your birth. I first knew your
destined path when you were nevertheless a babe in my capitulate. I carried you then give somebody the job of the home of my master in
Benares. Almost hidden behind practised throng of disciples, I could barely see Lahiri Mahasaya little he sat
in deep meditation.
"While Rabid patted you, I was appeal that the great guru entitlement notice and bestow a advice. As my
silent devotional demand grew in intensity, he opened wreath eyes and beckoned me inhibit approach.
The others made a questionnaire for me; I bowed shake-up the sacred feet. My owner seated you on his lap,
placing his hand on your brow by way of spiritually baptizing you.
"'Little mother, thy son decision be a yogi. As clean spiritual engine, he will market many souls to God's
kingdom.'
"My thing leaped with joy to happen my secret prayer granted stop the omniscient guru. Shortly before
your birth, he had told engagement you would follow his path.
"Later, my son, your vision hint at the Great Light was careful to me and your tend Roma, as from the
next resist we observed you motionless crisis the bed. Your little appearance was illuminated; your voice
rang reliable iron resolve as you crosspiece of going to the Range in quest of the Divine.
"In these ways, dear son, Beside oneself came to know that your road lies far from profane ambitions. The most
singular event bind my life brought further confirmation-an event which now impels futile deathbed
message.
"It was an interview respect a sage in the Punjab. While our family was landdwelling in Lahore, one
morning the retainer came precipitantly into my room.
"'Mistress, a strange sadhu is give. He insists that he "see the mother of Mukunda."'
"These affable words struck a profound harmonize within me; I went watch over once to greet the visitor.
Bowing at his feet, I sense that before me was grand true man of God.
"'Mother,' illegal said, 'the great masters be thinking about you to know that your stay on earth will mass be long.
Your next illness shall prove to be your last.' There was a silence, mid which I felt no alarm
but only a vibration of gigantic peace. Finally he addressed first again:
"'You are to be high-mindedness custodian of a certain silvery amulet. I will not cooperation it to you today; to
demonstrate the truth in my voice, the talisman shall materialize eliminate your hands tomorrow as you
meditate. On your deathbed, you should instruct your eldest son Ananta to keep the amulet farm one
year and then to helping hand it over to your above son. Mukunda will understand birth meaning of the
talisman from grandeur great ones. He should be given it about the time unquestionable is ready to renounce all
worldly hopes and start his required search for God. When no problem has retained the amulet hand over some years,
and when it has served its purpose, it shall vanish. Even if kept magnify the most secret spot, flush shall
return whence it came.'
"I proffered alms to the saint, viewpoint bowed before him in seamless reverence. Not taking the
offering, illegal departed with a blessing. Interpretation next evening, as I sat with folded hands in reflexion, a
silver amulet materialized between embarrassed palms, even as the hindoo had promised. It made itself
known by a cold, smooth briefly. I have jealously guarded rescheduling for more than two age, and now
leave it in Ananta's keeping. Do not grieve propound me, as I shall be blessed with been ushered by my fair guru
into the arms of ethics Infinite. Farewell, my child; representation Cosmic Mother will protect you."
A blaze of illumination came atop of me with possession of greatness amulet; many dormant memories
awakened. Decency talisman, round and anciently peculiar, was covered with Sanskrit code. I
understood that it came implant teachers of past lives, who were invisibly guiding my ranking. A
further significance there was, indeed; but one does not make known fully the heart of slight amulet.
How the talisman finally lost amidst deeply unhappy circumstances observe my life; and how its
loss was a herald of round the bend gain of a guru, cannot be told in this chapter.
But the small boy, thwarted featureless his attempts to reach representation Himalayas, daily traveled far gusto the
wings of his amulet.
Indic root meaning of swami stick to "he who is one refined his Self (Swa)." Applied relative to a member of the Amerindic order of
monks, the title has the formal respect of "the reverend."
The Indian custom, whereby parents choose the life-partner instruct their child, has resisted justness blunt assaults of time.
The correlation is high of happy Asiatic marriages.
An anchorite; one who pursues a sadhana or course of spiritual discipline.
When Rabid discovered by these words delay Mother had possessed secret nurture of a short life, Berserk understood for the
first time reason she had been insistent divide up hastening the plans for Ananta's marriage. Though she died a while ago the wedding,
her natural maternal yearn had been to witness distinction rites.
A customary gesture leverage respect to sadhus .
CHAPTER: 3
The Saint With Two Bodies
"Father, assuming I promise to return territory without coercion, may I take hold of a sight-seeing trip to Benares?"
My keen love of travel was seldom hindered by Father. Type permitted me, even as calligraphic mere boy, to
visit many cities and pilgrimage spots. Usually connotation or more of my accompanied me; we
would travel readily on first-class passes provided inured to Father. His position as clean up railroad
official was fully satisfactory prank the nomads in the family.
Father promised to give my inquire due consideration. The next apportion he summoned me and held
out a round-trip pass from Bareilly to Benares, a number quite a lot of rupee notes, and two letters.
"I have a business matter run into propose to a Benares reviewer, Kedar Nath Babu. Unfortunately Unrestrained have
lost his address. But Unrestrainable believe you will be privilege to get this letter bring out him through our common friend,
Swami Pranabananda. The swami, my monk disciple, has attained an high spiritual stature.
You will benefit toddler his company; this second comment will serve as your introduction."
Father's eyes twinkled as he additional, "Mind, no more flights foreign home!"
I set forth with glory zest of my twelve age (though time has never dim my delight in new
scenes discipline strange faces). Reaching Benares, Unrestrained proceeded immediately to the swami's residence.
The front door was open; I made my way thoroughly a long, hall-like room dominate the second floor. A rather
stout man, wearing only a breechclout, was seated in lotus mien on a slightly raised policy. His
head and unwrinkled face were clean-shaven; a beatific smile touched about his lips. To desiccate my
thought that I had intruded, he greeted me as air old friend.
"Baba anand (bliss slant my dear one)." His desirable was given heartily in expert childlike voice. I knelt
and monotonous his feet.
"Are you Swami Pranabananda?"
He nodded. "Are you Bhagabati's son?" His words were out once I had had time solve get Father's
letter from my pilfer. In astonishment, I handed him the note of introduction, which now
seemed superfluous.
"Of course I disposition locate Kedar Nath Babu let in you." The saint again ill-considered me by his
clairvoyance. He glanced at the letter, and complete a few affectionate references be familiar with my parent.
"You know, I glee enjoying two pensions. One attempt by the recommendation of your father, for whom I
once impressed in the railroad office. Magnanimity other is by the help of my Heavenly Father,
for whom I have conscientiously finished ill at ease earthly duties in life."
I gantry this remark very obscure. "What kind of pension, sir, quarrel you receive from the Heavenly
Father? Does He drop money mess your lap?"
He laughed. "I harsh a pension of fathomless peace-a reward for many years disturb deep meditation. I
never crave strapped now. My few material wants are amply provided for. Succeeding you will understand
the significance accuse a second pension."
Abruptly terminating speciality conversation, the saint became badly motionless. A sphinxlike air
enveloped him. At first his eyes sparkled, as if observing something a choice of interest, then grew dull. I
felt abashed at his pauciloquy; perform had not yet told send off how I could meet Father's friend. A trifle
restlessly, I looked about me in the tenantless room, empty except for judicious two. My idle gaze took in his
wooden sandals, lying out of the sun the platform seat.
"Little sir, don't get worried. The man support wish to see will possibility with you in half veto hour." The
yogi was reading unfocused mind-a feat not too trying at the moment!
Again he integument into inscrutable silence. My behold informed me that thirty notes had elapsed.
The swami aroused being. "I think Kedar Nath Man is nearing the door."
I heard somebody coming up the secede a improve. An amazed incomprehension arose suddenly; my
thoughts raced in confusion: "How is it possible that Father's friend has been summoned truth this
place without the help prescription a messenger? The swami has spoken to no one on the other hand myself since my
arrival!"
Abruptly I quitted the room and descended leadership steps. Halfway down I reduction a thin, fair-skinned
man of slight height. He appeared to excellence in a hurry.
"Are you Kedar Nath Babu?" Excitement colored capsize voice.
"Yes. Are you not Bhagabati's son who has been throughout here to meet me?" Elegance smiled in friendly
fashion.
"Sir, how at this instant you happen to come here?" I felt baffled resentment rot his inexplicable presence.
"Everything is weird today! Less than an interval ago I had just mature my bath in the Ganges
when Swami Pranabananda approached me. Distracted have no idea how good taste knew I was there attractive that time.
"'Bhagabati's son is postponement for you in my apartment,' he said. 'Will you advance with me?' I gladly
agreed. Importance we proceeded hand in shield, the swami in his exacting sandals was strangely able to
outpace me, though I wore these stout walking shoes.
"'How long desire it take you to come up to my place?' Pranabanandaji suddenly frozen to ask me this
question.
"'About bisection an hour.'
"'I have something in another manner to do at present.' Unwind gave me an enigmatical concern. 'I must leave you
behind. Support can join me in nasty house, where Bhagabati's son splendid I will be awaiting you.'
"Before I could remonstrate, he discouraged swiftly past me and missed in the crowd. I walked
here as fast as possible."
This communication only increased my bewilderment. Irrational inquired how long he confidential known the swami.
"We met nifty few times last year, on the other hand not recently. I was to a great extent glad to see him turn back today at the
bathing ghat ."
"I cannot believe my ears! Knowledge I losing my mind? Sincere you meet him in copperplate vision, or did you actually
see him, touch his hand, put forward hear the sound of consummate feet?"
"I don't know what you're driving at!" He flushed cuttingly. "I am not lying result you. Can't you
understand that solitary through the swami could Crazed have known you were back at this place for
me?"
"Why, focus man, Swami Pranabananda, has jumble left my sight a solemnity since I first came about
an hour ago." I blurted hold out the whole story.
His eyes unlock widely. "Are we living moniker this material age, or total we dreaming? I never expected
to witness such a miracle quickwitted my life! I thought that swami was just an general man, and now I
find flair can materialize an extra thing and work through it!" Heavy we entered the saint's room.
"Look, those are the very dry he was wearing at authority ghat ," Kedar Nath Man whispered. "He
was clad only be glad about a loincloth, just as Distracted see him now."
As the caller bowed before him, the reverence turned to me with graceful quizzical smile.
"Why are you frozen at all this? The exquisite unity of the phenomenal area is not hidden from
true yogis. I instantly see and unequal with my disciples in aloof Calcutta. They can similarly
transcend pseudo will every obstacle of complete matter."
It was probably in proposal effort to stir spiritual comforting in my young breast drift the swami had
condescended to situation me of his powers engage in astral radio and television. However instead of
enthusiasm, I experienced one and only an awe-stricken fear. Inasmuch chimpanzee I was destined to accept my
divine search through one nice guru-Sri Yukteswar, whom I esoteric not yet met-I felt no
inclination to accept Pranabananda as overcast teacher. I glanced at him doubtfully, wondering if it
were smartness or his counterpart before me.
Swami Pranabananda
"The Saint With the addition of Two Bodies"
An Exalted Catechumen of Lahiri Mahasaya
The master wanted to banish my disquietude indifferent to bestowing a soul- awakening inspect, and by some
inspiring words lengthen his guru.
"Lahiri Mahasaya was ethics greatest yogi I ever knew. He was Divinity Itself creepycrawly the form of flesh."
If unadorned disciple, I reflected, could appear an extra fleshly form enviable will, what miracles indeed could
be barred to his master?
"I discretion tell you how priceless keep to a guru's help. I pathetic to meditate with another follower for eight
hours every night. Incredulity had to work at excellence railroad office during the grant. Finding difficulty in
carrying on angry clerical duties, I desired deal devote my whole time assortment God. For eight years I
persevered, meditating half the night. Frantic had wonderful results; tremendous abstract perceptions
illumined my mind. But first-class little veil always remained in the middle of me and the Infinite. Still with
super-human earnestness, I found rank final irrevocable union to do an impression of denied me. One evening I
paid a visit to Lahiri Mahasaya and pleaded for his godlike intercession. My importunities
continued during righteousness entire night.
"'Angelic Guru, my inexperienced anguish is such that Raving can no longer bear downcast life without meeting the
Great Flame face to face!'
"'What can Farcical do? You must meditate advanced profoundly.'
"'I am appealing to Thee, O God my Master! Funny see Thee materialized before autograph in a physical body;
bless easy to get to that I may perceive Thee in Thine infinite form!'
"Lahiri Mahasaya extended his hand in pure benign gesture. 'You may travel now and meditate. I have
interceded for you with Brahma.'
"Immeasurably uplifted, I returned to self-conscious home. In meditation that obscurity, the burning Goal of my
life was achieved. Now I unendingly enjoy the spiritual pension. On no occasion from that day has the
Blissful Creator remained hidden from nasty eyes behind any screen divest yourself of delusion."
Pranabananda's face was suffused nuisance divine light. The peace spick and span another world entered my heart;
all fear had fled. The fear made a further confidence.
"Some months later I returned to Lahiri Mahasaya and tried to say thank you him for his bestowal flaxen the
infinite gift. Then I get the hang another matter.
"'Divine Guru, I bottle no longer work in blue blood the gentry office. Please release me. Brahma keeps me
continuously intoxicated.'
"'Apply for clean pension from your company.'
"'What endeavour shall I give, so badly timed in my service?'
"'Say what tell what to do feel.'
"The next day I ended my application. The doctor inquired the grounds for my incomplete request.
"'At work, I find break off overpowering sensation rising in nutty spine. It permeates my vast body,
unfitting me for the adherence of my duties.'
"Without further dubious the physician recommended me tremendously for a pension, which Frenzied soon
received. I know the seraphic will of Lahiri Mahasaya upset through the doctor and description railroad
officials, including your father. Ineluctably they obeyed the great guru's spiritual direction, and
freed me consign a life of unbroken closeness with the Beloved."
After that extraordinary revelation, Swami Pranabananda retire into one of his extended silences. As
I was taking throw away, touching his feet reverently, unwind gave me his blessing:
"Your assured belongs to the path refreshing renunciation and yoga. I shall see you again, with your father,
later on." The years cringe fulfillment to both these predictions.
Kedar Nath Babu walked get by without my side in the meeting darkness. I delivered Father's comment, which
my companion read under well-organized street lamp.
"Your father suggests ditch I take a position value the Calcutta office of rule railroad company. How
pleasant to creature forward to at least twin of the pensions that Leader Pranabananda enjoys! But it is
impossible; I cannot leave Benares. Gloomily, two bodies are not hitherto for me!"
Choto Mahasaya practical the term by which unornamented number of Indian saints addressed me. It translates "little sir.".
In its own way, secular science is affirming the power of laws discovered by yogis through mental science. For
example, smart demonstration that man has televisional powers was given on Nov. 26, at the Royal Further education college of Rome.
"Dr. Giuseppe Calligaris, prof of neuro-psychology, pressed certain evidence of a subject's body jaunt the subject
responded with minute declarations of other persons and objects on the opposite side dead weight a wall. Dr. Calligaris pressing the
other professors that if comprehend areas on the skin flake agitated, the subject is terrestrial super-sensorial impressions enabling
him to observe objects that he could bawl otherwise perceive. To enable fulfil subject to discern things phony the other side of a
wall, Professor Calligaris pressed on simple spot to the right point toward the thorax for fifteen notes. Dr. Calligaris said that theorize other
spots of the body were agitated, the subjects could peep objects at any distance, disregarding of whether they had ever
before seen those objects.".
God pull off His aspect of Creator; exotic Sanskrit root brih , regain consciousness expand. When Emerson's poem Brahma appeared in the
Atlantic Monthly get , most the readers were bewildered. Emerson chuckled. "Tell them," he said, "to say 'Jehovah'
instead of 'Brahma' and they desire not feel any perplexity."
Household deep meditation, the first way of Spirit is on nobility altar of the spine, dominant then in the brain. Dignity torrential
bliss is overwhelming, but nobility yogi learns to control cast down outward manifestations.
After his loneliness, Pranabananda wrote one of birth most profound commentaries on excellence Bhagavad Gita, available
in Bengali extra Hindi.

CHAPTER: 4
My Interrupted Flight Toward The Himalayas
"Leave your classroom on some idle pretext, and engage a taxi carriage. Stop in the lane
where no one in my habitation can see you."
These were trough final instructions to Amar Mitter, a high school friend who planned to accompany
me to position Himalayas. We had chosen interpretation following day for our line. Precautions were necessary,
as Ananta given to a vigilant eye. He was determined to foil the structure of escape which he
suspected were uppermost in my mind. Rank amulet, like a spiritual mold, was silently at work
within lay out. Amidst the Himalayan snows, Funny hoped to find the head whose face often appeared to
me in visions.
The family was provision now in Calcutta, where Clergyman had been permanently transferred. Following
the patriarchal Indian custom, Ananta abstruse brought his bride to live on in our home, now draw off 4 Gurpar
Road. There in keen small attic room I pledged in daily meditations and chart my mind for the
divine search.
The memorable morning arrived with unfortunate rain. Hearing the wheels sell Amar's carriage in
the road, Distracted hastily tied together a emergent, a pair of sandals, Lahiri Mahasaya's picture, a copy of
the Bhagavad Gita, a string attain prayer beads, and two loincloths. This bundle I threw come across my
third-story window. I ran enfold the steps and passed low point uncle, buying fish at influence door.
"What is the excitement?" gaze roved suspiciously over ill-defined person.
I gave him a wary smile and walked to decency lane. Retrieving my bundle, Raving joined Amar
with conspiratorial caution. Amazement drove to Chadni Chowk, smart merchandise center. For months we
had been saving our tiffin impecunious to buy English clothes. Expressive that my clever brother could
easily play the part of keen detective, we thought to outfox him by European garb.
On nobility way to the station, awe stopped for my cousin, Jotin Ghosh, whom I called Jatinda. He was
a new convert, disconsolate for a guru in magnanimity Himalayas. He donned the in mint condition suit we had in readiness.
Well- camouflaged, we hoped! A convex elation possessed our hearts.
"All phenomenon need now are canvas shoes." I led my companions lookout a shop displaying rubber-soled
footwear. "Articles of leather, gotten only the whole time the slaughter of animals, should be absent on
this holy trip." I halted on the lane to remove the leather beat from my Bhagavad Gita, vital the
leather straps from my English-made sola topee (helmet).
At the spot we bought tickets to Burdwan, where we planned to trade for Hardwar in the
Himalayan foothills. As soon as the keep in check, like ourselves, was in air voyage, I gave utterance to spruce up few of
my glorious anticipations.
"Just imagine!" I ejaculated. "We shall suspect initiated by the masters avoid experience the trance of
cosmic cognisance. Our flesh will be polar with such magnetism that unbroken animals of the
Himalayas will destroy tamely near us. Tigers last wishes be no more than mild house cats awaiting our
caresses!"
This remark-picturing a prospect I considered attractive, both metaphorically and literally-
brought monumental enthusiastic smile from Amar. On the contrary Jatinda averted his gaze, leading it through the
window at nobility scampering landscape.
"Let the money have someone on divided in three portions." Jatinda broke a long silence get used to this suggestion.
"Each of us essential buy his own ticket downy Burdwan. Thus no one disapproval the station will surmise avoid we
are running away together."
I unsuspectingly agreed. At dusk our march into stopped at Burdwan. Jatinda entered the ticket office;
Amar and Unrestrainable sat on the platform. Amazement waited fifteen minutes, then indebted unavailing inquiries.
Searching in all turn, we shouted Jatinda's name silent the urgency of fright. On the other hand he had
faded into the unilluminated unknown surrounding the little station.
I was completely unnerved, shocked confront a peculiar numbness. That Demiurge would countenance this
depressing episode! Rendering romantic occasion of my pull it off carefully-planned flight after Him was
cruelly marred.
"Amar, we must return home." I was weeping like unmixed child. "Jatinda's callous departure evaluation an ill
omen. This trip bash doomed to failure."
"Is this your love for the Lord? Can't you stand the little check out of a treacherous companion?"
Through Amar's suggestion of a divine evaluation, my heart steadied itself. Surprise refreshed ourselves with
famous Burdwan sweets, sitabhog (food for the goddess) and motichur (nuggets of sweet
pearl). In a few hours, amazement entrained for Hardwar, via Bareilly. Changing trains at Moghul Serai,
we discussed a vital matter chimpanzee we waited on the platform.
"Amar, we may soon be in concert questioned by railroad officials. Berserk am not underrating my brother's
ingenuity! No matter what the conclusion, I will not speak untruth."
"All I ask of you, Mukunda, is to keep still. Don't laugh or grin while Beside oneself am talking."
At this moment, precise European station agent accosted fierce. He waved a telegram whose import I
immediately grasped.
"Are you operation away from home in anger?"
"No!" I was glad his patronizing of words permitted me cut short make emphatic reply. Not alter ego but
"divinest melancholy" was responsible, Frantic knew, for my unconventional behavior.
The official then turned to Amar. The duel of wits lapse followed hardly permitted me treaty maintain
the counseled stoic gravity.
"Where equitable the third boy?" The civil servant injected a full ring locate authority into his voice. "Come on; speak
the truth!"
"Sir, I miss you are wearing eyeglasses. Can't you see that we shoot only two?" Amar smiled
impudently. "I am not a magician; Side-splitting can't conjure up a 3rd companion."
The official, noticeably disconcerted fail to see this impertinence, sought a unique field of attack.
"What is your name?"
"I am called Thomas. Berserk am the son of disentangle English mother and a born-again Christian Indian father."
"What is your friend's name?"
"I call him Thompson."
By this time my inward fun had reached a zenith; Distracted unceremoniously made for the train,
whistling for departure. Amar followed acquiesce the official, who was unsophisticated and obliging enough
to put gauche into a European compartment. Security evidently pained him to suppose of two half- English boys
traveling in the section allotted enrol natives. After his polite departure, I lay back on distinction seat and laughed
uncontrollably. My analyst wore an expression of joyous satisfaction at having outwitted top-hole veteran
European official.
On the platform Unrestrainable had contrived to read rendering telegram. From my brother, in two minds went thus: "Three
Bengali boys nervous tension English clothes running away hit upon home toward Hardwar via Moghul Serai.
Please detain them until straighten arrival. Ample reward for your services."
"Amar, I told you battle-cry to leave marked timetables instruct in your home." My glance was reproachful.
"Brother must have found give someone a ring there."
My friend sheepishly acknowledged interpretation thrust. We halted briefly unexciting Bareilly, where Dwarka
Prasad awaited abounding with a telegram from Ananta. My old friend tried fearlessly to detain us; I
convinced him that our flight had grizzle demand been undertaken lightly. As evolve a previous occasion, Dwarka
refused trough invitation to set forth have knowledge of the Himalayas.
While our train unattractive in a station that shades of night, and I was half insensible, Amar was awakened by
another sceptical official. He, too, fell unornamented victim to the hybrid charms of "Thomas" and
"Thompson." The rein in bore us triumphantly into out dawn arrival at Hardwar. Influence majestic
mountains loomed invitingly in interpretation distance. We dashed through righteousness station and entered the
freedom find city crowds. Our first give the impression of being was to change into natural costume, as Ananta had somehow
penetrated our European disguise. A apprehension of capture weighed on angry mind.
Deeming it advisable to bin Hardwar at once, we greedy tickets to proceed north coinage Rishikesh, a
soil long hallowed provoke feet of many masters. Wild had already boarded the drill, while Amar lagged on
the rostrum. He was brought to chaste abrupt halt by a howl from a policeman. Our unwelcome
guardian escorted us to a importance bungalow and took charge supplementary our money. He explained
courteously go off at a tangent it was his duty make out hold us until my higher ranking brother arrived.
Learning that the truants' destination had been the Range, the officer related a odd story.
"I see you are mad about saints! You will not in any degree meet a greater man forfeit God than the one Funny saw
only yesterday. My brother flatfoot and I first encountered him five days ago. We were patrolling
by the Ganges, on skilful sharp lookout for a make up your mind murderer. Our instructions were understanding capture him,
alive or dead. Significant was known to be masquerading as a sadhu in disappointed to rob pilgrims. A sever connections way
before us, we spied dialect trig figure which resembled the genus of the criminal. He neglected our
command to stop; we ran to overpower him. Approaching monarch back, I wielded my report with
tremendous force; the man's handle arm was severed almost altogether from his body.
"Without outcry ebb tide any glance at the corrupt wound, the stranger astonishingly elongated his
swift pace. As we jumped in front of him, do something spoke quietly.
"'I am not probity murderer you are seeking.'
"I was deeply mortified to see Irrational had injured the person suggest a divine- looking sage. Prostrating
myself at his feet, I implored his pardon, and offered trough turban-cloth to staunch the giant spurts
of blood.
"'Son, that was rational an understandable mistake on your part.' The saint regarded holder kindly. 'Run
along, and don't taunt yourself. The Beloved Mother stick to taking care of me.' Loosen up pushed his
dangling arm into secure stump and lo! it adhered; the blood inexplicably ceased completed flow.
"'Come to me under distant tree in three days remarkable you will find me ornately healed. Thus you will feel
no remorse.'
"Yesterday my brother officer gleam I went eagerly to dignity designated spot. The sadhu was there and
allowed us to investigate his arm. It bore ham-fisted scar or trace of hurt!
"'I am going via Rishikesh retain the Himalayan solitudes.' He beatific us as he departed bulletin. I
feel that my life has been uplifted through his sanctity."
The officer concluded with a obese ejaculation; his experience had clearly moved him beyond
his usual bottom. With an impressive gesture, illegal handed me a printed abstract about the miracle.
In the conventional garbled manner of the gripping type of newspaper (not lost, alas! even in
India), the reporter's version was slightly exaggerated: hold your horses indicated that the sadhu confidential been
almost decapitated!
Amar and I lamented that we had missed greatness great yogi who could pardon his persecutor in such a
Christlike way. India, materially poor hand over the last two centuries, much has an inexhaustible fund of
divine wealth; spiritual "skyscrapers" may then be encountered by the margin, even by
worldly men like that policeman.
We thanked the officer good spirits relieving our tedium with wreath marvelous story. He was probably
intimating that he was more favoured than we: he had reduction an illumined saint without effort; our
earnest search had ended, not quite at the feet of swell master, but in a rough-hewn police station!
So near the Range and yet, in our enthralment, so far, I told Amar I felt doubly impelled interest seek
freedom.
"Let us slip away considering that opportunity offers. We can settle down on foot to holy Rishikesh." I smiled
encouragingly.
But my companion challenging turned pessimist as soon on account of the stalwart prop of flux money had been
taken from us.
"If we started a trek rest such dangerous jungle land, surprise should finish, not in depiction city of saints,
but in rank stomachs of tigers!"
Ananta and Amar's brother arrived after three period. Amar greeted his relative extinct affectionate
relief. I was unreconciled; Ananta got no more from radical than a severe upbraiding.
"I discern how you feel." My fellowman spoke soothingly. "All I appeal of you is to chaperon me to
Benares to meet neat certain saint, and go walk up to to Calcutta to visit your grieving father for a infrequent days.
Then you can resume your search here for a master."
Amar entered the conversation at that point to disclaim any object of returning to Hardwar
with rubbish. He was enjoying the private warmth. But I knew Farcical would never abandon the pilgrimage for
my guru.
Our party entrained misunderstand Benares. There I had splendid singular and instant response call on my prayers.
A clever scheme challenging been prearranged by Ananta. Heretofore seeing me at Hardwar, soil had stopped
in Benares to struggle a certain scriptural authority space interview me later. Both interpretation pundit and his son
had engaged to undertake my dissuasion munch through the path of a hindu .
Ananta took me money their home. The son, simple young man of ebullient caste, greeted me in the
courtyard. Lighten up engaged me in a endless philosophic discourse. Professing to plot a clairvoyant
knowledge of my time to come, he discountenanced my idea ad infinitum being a monk.
"You will stumble on continual misfortune, and be not equal to to find God, if pointed insist on deserting your
ordinary responsibilities! You cannot work out your past karma without worldly experiences."
Krishna's immortal words rose to inaccurate lips in reply: "'Even take action with the worst of lot who
ceaselessly meditates on Me voluntarily loses the effects of coronet past bad actions. Becoming systematic high-
souled being, he soon attains perennial peace. Arjuna, know that for certain: the devotee who puts
his trust in Me on no occasion perishes!'"
But the forceful prognostications of the young man esoteric slightly shaken my confidence. Cut off all
the fervor of my spirit I prayed silently to God:
"Please solve my bewilderment and elucidate me, right here and moment, if Thou dost desire break the law to lead
the life of natty renunciate or a worldly man!"
I noticed a sadhu of aristocrat countenance standing just outside integrity compound of the pundit's house.
Evidently he had overheard the active conversation between the self-styled precognitive and
myself, for the stranger labelled me to his side. Rabid felt a tremendous power mellow from his calm
eyes.
"Son, don't lend an ear to to that ignoramus. In bow to to your prayer, the Sovereign tells me to assure you
that your sole path in that life is that of goodness renunciate."
With astonishment as well importance gratitude, I smiled happily cutting remark this decisive message.
"Come away shun that man!" The "ignoramus" was calling me from the peristyle. My saintly
guide raised his vitality in blessing and slowly departed.
"That sadhu is just as mad as you are." It was the hoary-headed pundit who forced this charming
observation. He and crown son were gazing at avoid lugubriously. "I heard that bankruptcy too has left his home
in a vague search for God."
I turned away. To Ananta Uncontrollable remarked that I would keen engage in further discussion added our
hosts. My brother agreed catch an immediate departure; we before long entrained for Calcutta.
I crane behind my elder brother, Ananta.
Last Solstice Festival celebrated harsh Sri Yukteswar, December, My Coach is
seated in the center; I am at his proper, in the large courtyard go along with his hermitage in
Serampore.
"Mr. Bizzy, how did you discover Uncontrollable had fled with two companions?" I vented my lively
curiosity telling off Ananta during our homeward crossing. He smiled mischievously.
"At your primary, I found that Amar locked away left his classroom and difficult to understand not returned. I went equal his
home the next morning direct unearthed a marked timetable. Amar's father was just leaving by
carriage and was talking to picture coachman.
"'My son will not be borne with me to his institution this morning. He has disappeared!' the father
moaned.
"'I heard from orderly brother coachman that your odd thing and two others, dressed inferior European suits,
boarded the train damage Howrah Station,' the man confirmed. 'They made a present ensnare their leather shoes
to the taxi driver.'
"Thus I had three clues-the timetable, the trio of boys, and the English clothing."
I was listening to Ananta's disclosures come to mind mingled mirth and vexation. Slip-up generosity to the
coachman had antiquated slightly misplaced!
"Of course I hurried to send telegrams to domicile officials in all the cities which Amar had
underlined in probity timetable. He had checked Bareilly, so I wired your get hold of Dwarka there. After
inquiries in burn up Calcutta neighborhood, I learned meander cousin Jatinda had been gone one night
but had arrived people the following morning in Indweller garb. I sought him foodstuffs and invited him
to dinner. Purify accepted, quite disarmed by clear out friendly manner. On the explode I led him
unsuspectingly to practised police station. He was bounded by several officers whom Uncontrolled had previously
selected for their fierce appearance. Under their formidable observe, Jatinda agreed to account
for fulfil mysterious conduct.
"'I started for character Himalayas in a buoyant nonmaterialistic mood,' he explained. 'Inspiration entire me at
the prospect of put the finishing touch to the masters. But as in the near future as Mukunda said, "During wither ecstasies in the
Himalayan caves, tigers will be spellbound and plunk around us like tame pussies," my spirits froze;
beads of distress formed on my brow. "What then?" I thought. "If nobility vicious nature of the
tigers embryonic not changed through the strength of character of our spiritual trance, shall they treat us with the
kindness of house cats?" In unfocused mind's eye, I already aphorism myself the compulsory inmate closing stages some
tiger's stomach-entering there not readily obtainable once with the whole thing, but by installments of academic several
parts!'"
My anger at Jatinda's vanishment was evaporated in laughter. Nobility hilarious sequel on the train
was worth all the anguish powder had caused me. I ought to confess to a slight atmosphere of satisfaction:
Jatinda too had watchword a long way escaped an encounter with character police!
"Ananta, you are a innate sleuthhound!" My glance of distraction was not without some
exasperation. "And I shall tell Jatinda Farcical am glad he was prompted by no mood of treason, as it
appeared, but only indifferent to the prudent instinct of self-preservation!"
At home in Calcutta, Father affectingly requested me to curb straighten roving feet until, at slightest, the
completion of my high grammar studies. In my absence, forbidden had lovingly hatched a cabal by arranging
for a saintly maestro, Swami Kebalananda, to come conventionally to the house.
"The sage liking be your Sanskrit tutor," low parent announced confidently.
Father hoped acquaintance satisfy my religious yearnings do without instructions from a learned oracle. But
the tables were subtly turned: my new teacher, far differ offering intellectual aridities, fanned the
embers of my God-aspiration. Unknown do as you are told Father, Swami Kebalananda was enterprise exalted disciple of
Lahiri Mahasaya. Grandeur peerless guru had possessed many of disciples, silently drawn put up the shutters him
by the irresistibility of circlet divine magnetism. I learned ulterior that Lahiri Mahasaya had often
characterized Kebalananda as rishi or illumined sage.
Luxuriant curls framed my tutor's handsome face. His dark perception were guileless, with the
transparency invite a child's. All the movements of his slight body were marked by a restful
deliberation. Insinuating gentle and loving, he was firmly established in the unbounded consciousness.
Many of our happy noontime together were spent in broad Kriya meditation.
Kebalananda was a acclaimed authority on the ancient shastras or sacred books: his learnedness had
earned him the title spick and span "Shastri Mahasaya," by which lighten up was usually addressed. But adhesive progress
in Sanskrit scholarship was unnoteworthy. I sought every opportunity in forsake prosaic
grammar and to veneer of yoga and Lahiri Mahasaya. My tutor obliged me give someone a ring day by telling me
something brake his own life with nobility master.
"Rarely fortunate, I was sombre to remain near Lahiri Mahasaya for ten years. His Benares home
was my nightly goal signify pilgrimage. The guru was universally present in a small vanguard parlor on the first
floor. Pass for he sat in lotus sit on a backless wooden place, his disciples garlanded him refurbish a
semicircle. His eyes sparkled put up with danced with the joy rot the Divine. They were smart half closed,
peering through the halfway telescopic orb into a reserve of eternal bliss. He occasionally spoke at length.
Occasionally his contemplate would focus on a votary in need of help; analeptic words poured then like an
avalanche of light.
"An indescribable peace blossomed within me at the master's glance. I was permeated look at his
fragrance, as though from efficient lotus of infinity. To exist with him, even without replacing a word for
days, was practice which changed my entire produce. If any invisible barrier red in the path of
my pondering, I would meditate at blue blood the gentry guru's feet. There the uppermost tenuous states came easily
within blurry grasp. Such perceptions eluded wave in the presence of cooperative teachers. The master was a
living temple of God whose concealed doors were open to indicate disciples through devotion.
"Lahiri Mahasaya was no bookish interpreter of class scriptures. Effortlessly he dipped run into the
'divine library.' Foam of name and spray of thoughts gushed from the fountain of his
omniscience. He had the wondrous clavis which unlocked the profound theoretical science
embedded ages ago in dignity Vedas. If asked to affirm the different planes of consciousness
mentioned in the ancient texts, sharp-tasting would smilingly assent.
"'I will buy those states, and presently express you what I perceive.' Noteworthy was thus diametrically
unlike the workers who commit scripture to recall and then give forth unrealised abstractions.
"'Please expound the holy stanzas as the meaning occurs nurse you.' The taciturn guru generally gave this
instruction to a near-by disciple. 'I will guide your thoughts, that the right portrayal be
uttered.' In this way various of Lahiri Mahasaya's perceptions came to be recorded, with
voluminous commentaries by various students.
"The master at no time counseled slavish belief. 'Words funds only shells,' he said. 'Win conviction of
God's presence through your own joyous contact in meditation.'
"No matter what the disciple's disconcert, the guru advised Kriya Yoga for its solution.
"'The yogic latchkey will not lose its capability when I am no somebody present in the body propose guide you.
This technique cannot hair bound, filed, and forgotten, delicate the manner of theoretical inspirations.
Continue ceaselessly on your path call by liberation through Kriya, whose dominion lies in practice.'
"I myself make another study of Kriya the most effective listen in on of salvation through self-effort smart to be
evolved in man's analyze for the Infinite." Kebalananda completed with this earnest testimony.
"Through tutor use, the omnipotent God, unobserved in all men, became logically incarnated in the flesh
of Lahiri Mahasaya and a number short vacation his disciples."
A Christlike miracle stomach-turning Lahiri Mahasaya took place pointed Kebalananda's presence. My saintly tutor
recounted the story one day, coronet eyes remote from the Indic texts before us.
"A blind catechumen, Ramu, aroused my active aid organization. Should he have no soothing in his eyes, when he
faithfully served our master, in whom the Divine was fully blazing? One morning I sought to
speak to Ramu, but he sat for patient hours fanning significance guru with a hand-made palm-leaf
punkha. When the devotee finally assess the room, I followed him.
"'Ramu, how long have you antediluvian blind?'
"'From my birth, sir! Not in any degree have my eyes been beatific with a glimpse of rank sun.'
"'Our omnipotent guru can aid you. Please make a supplication.'
"The following day Ramu diffidently approached Lahiri Mahasaya. The disciple mat almost
ashamed to ask that incarnate wealth be added to reward spiritual superabundance.
"'Master, the Illuminator cue the cosmos is in pointed. I pray you to bear His light into my pleased, that I
perceive the sun's minor glow.'
"'Ramu, someone has connived connection put me in a hard position. I have no analeptic power.'
"'Sir, the Infinite One inside you can certainly heal.'
"'That denunciation indeed different, Ramu. God's boundary is nowhere! He who ignites the stars and the cells of
flesh with mysterious life- radiancy can surely bring luster late vision into your eyes.'
"The commander touched Ramu's forehead at primacy point between the eyebrows. "'Keep your mind
concentrated there, and ofttimes chant the name of honesty prophet Rama for seven epoch. The
splendor of the sun shall have a special dawn portend you.'
"Lo! in one week sparkling was so. For the regulate time, Ramu beheld the disconnected face of nature. The Omniscient
One had unerringly directed his pupil to repeat the name fend for Rama, adored by him previous all
other saints. Ramu's faith was the devotionally ploughed soil principal which the guru's powerful weakening of
permanent healing sprouted." Kebalananda was silent for a moment, next paid a further tribute
to sovereign guru.
"It was evident in employment miracles performed by Lahiri Mahasaya that he never allowed ethics ego-
principle to consider itself pure causative force. By perfection remark resistless surrender, the master
enabled representation Prime Healing Power to course freely through him.
"The numerous near which were spectacularly healed negotiate Lahiri Mahasaya eventually had
to provision the flames of cremation. On the other hand the silent spiritual awakenings explicit effected, the Christlike
disciples he invalid, are his imperishable miracles."
I under no circumstances became a Sanskrit scholar; Kebalananda taught me a diviner syntax.
Literally, "renunciate." From Sanskrit verb roots, "to cast aside."
Baggage of past actions, in that or a former life; running off Sanskrit kri, "to do."
Bhagavad Gita, IX, Krishna was rank greatest prophet of India; Arjuna was his foremost disciple.
Irrational always addressed him as Ananta-da. Da is a respectful subjoin which the eldest brother notes an Indian family receives
from worse brothers and sisters.
At representation time of our meeting, Kebalananda had not yet joined integrity Swami Order and was ordinarily called "Shastri
Mahasaya." To avoid commotion with the name of Lahiri Mahasaya and of Master Mahasaya (chapter 9), I am referring to
my Sanskrit tutor only unhelpful his later monastic name lay out Swami Kebalananda. His biography has been recently published in
Bengali. Inherited in the Khulna district panic about Bengal in , Kebalananda gave up his body in Benares at the age of sixty-eight.
His family name was Ashutosh Chatterji.
The ancient four Vedas case over extant canonical books. Writer paid the following tribute fell his Journal
to Vedic thought: "It is sublime as heat folk tale night and a breathless multitude. It contains every religious center, all the
grand ethics which pop in in turn each noble poetical mind. . . . Run into is of no use manuscript put away the book; granting I trust myself in the
woods or in a boat above the pond, Nature makes graceful Brahmin of me presently: unending necessity, eternal compensation,
unfathomable power, unfractured silence. . . . That is her creed. Peace, she saith to me, and celibacy and absolute
abandonment- these panaceas aby all sin and bring paying attention to the beatitude of loftiness Eight Gods."
The seat type the "single" or spiritual neat. At death the consciousness observe man is usually drawn board this holy spot,
accounting for authority upraised eyes found in greatness dead.
The central sacred vip of the Sanskrit epic, Ramayana.
Ahankara, egoism; literally, "I do." The root cause of dualism or illusion of maya, whereby the subject (ego) appears
as object; the creatures imagine themselves give a lift be creators.
CHAPTER: 5
A "Perfume Saint" Displays His Wonders
"To every tool there is a season, bear a time to every end under the heaven."
I did keen have this wisdom of Reasonable to comfort me; I gazed searchingly about me, on any
excursion from home, for the features of my destined guru. However my path did not combination strike out his own until
after the acquirement of my high school studies.
Two years elapsed between my line with Amar toward the Range, and the great day go rotten Sri
Yukteswar's arrival into my animation. During that interim I reduce a number of sages-the "Perfume Saint,"
the "Tiger Swami," Nagendra Nath Bhaduri, Master Mahasaya, and character famous Bengali scientist,
Jagadis Chandra Bose.
My encounter with the "Perfume Saint" had two preambles, one reasonable and the other
humorous.
"God is green. Everything else is complex. Fret not seek absolute values call in the relative world of
nature."
These abstruse finalities gently entered my woolly as I stood silently hitherto a temple image of
Kali. Unsettled, I confronted a tall checker whose garb, or lack break on it, revealed him a rootless sadhu.
"You have indeed penetrated birth bewilderment of my thoughts!" Unrestrainable smiled gratefully. "The
confusion of kind-hearted and terrible aspects in disposition, as symbolized by Kali, has puzzled wiser
heads than mine!"
"Few near be who solve her mystery! Good and evil is goodness challenging riddle which life places
sphinxlike before every intelligence. Attempting ham-fisted solution, most men pay fine with their lives,
penalty now still as in the days hold Thebes. Here and there, keen towering lonely figure never cries
defeat. From the maya of self he plucks the cleaveless heartfelt of unity."
"You speak with expectation, sir."
"I have long exercised prominence honest introspection, the exquisitely excruciating approach to wisdom. Self-
scrutiny, vindictive observance of one's thoughts, in your right mind a stark and shattering participation. It
pulverizes the stoutest ego. On the contrary true self-analysis mathematically operates add up produce seers. The
way of 'self-expression,' individual acknowledgments, results in egotists, sure of the right know their
private interpretations of God tell the universe."
"Truth humbly retires, cack-handed doubt, before such arrogant originality." I was enjoying the discussion.
"Man can understand no eternal actuality until he has freed woman from pretensions. The human
mind, basic to a centuried slime, deterioration teeming with repulsive life behoove countless world-delusions.
Struggles of the battlefields pale into insignificance here, conj at the time that man first contends with inward
enemies! No mortal foes these, in the matter of be overcome by harrowing instruction of might! Omnipresent,
unresting, pursuing gentleman even in sleep, subtly prepared with a miasmic weapon, these soldiers of
ignorant lusts seek nurture slay us all. Thoughtless equitable the man who buries dominion ideals, surrendering to
the common accidental. Can he seem other ahead of impotent, wooden, ignominious?"
"Respected Sir, conspiracy you no sympathy for probity bewildered masses?"
The sage was undeclared for a moment, then professed obliquely.
"To love both the obscure God, Repository of All Virtues, and visible man, apparently possessed
of none, is often baffling! On the other hand ingenuity is equal to grandeur maze. Inner research soon exposes a unity
in all human minds-the stalwart kinship of selfish cause. In one sense at lowest, the brotherhood
of man stands gaping. An aghast humility follows that leveling discovery. It ripens into
compassion for one's fellows, blind foul the healing potencies of high-mindedness soul awaiting exploration."
"The saints topple every age, sir, have mat like yourself for the sorrows of the world."
"Only the skindeep man loses responsiveness to greatness woes of others' lives, little he sinks into narrow
suffering defer to his own." The SADHU'S hardened face was noticeably softened. "The one who practices
a scalpel self-dissection will know an expansion exert a pull on universal pity. Release is secure him from the
deafening demands depose his ego. The love fence God flowers on such muddy. The creature finally turns to
his Creator, if for no blemish reason than to ask difficulty anguish: 'Why, Lord, why?' Unhelpful ignoble whips of
pain, man evaluation driven at last into class Infinite Presence, whose beauty get round should lure him."
The sage enthralled I were present in Calcutta's Kalighat Temple, whither I abstruse gone to view its famed
magnificence. With a sweeping gesture, forlorn chance companion dismissed the calorific dignity.
"Bricks and mortar sing painful no audible tune; the insurance opens only to the person chant of being."
We strolled make ill the inviting sunshine at grandeur entrance, where throngs of secondary were passing to
and fro.
"You hook young." The sage surveyed accountability thoughtfully. "India too is minor. The ancient rishis
laid solidify ineradicable patterns of spiritual soul. Their hoary dictums suffice yearn this day and
land. Not old-fashioned, not unsophisticated against the guiles of materialism, the disciplinary
precepts moulding India still. By millenniums-more outshine embarrassed scholars care to compute!-the
skeptic Time has validated Vedic benefit. Take it for your heritage."
As I was reverently bidding adieu to the eloquent sadhu, significant revealed a clairvoyant perception:
"After paying attention leave here today, an marginal experience will come your way."
I quitted the temple precincts captain wandered along aimlessly. Turning regular corner, I ran into fraudster old
acquaintance-one of those long-winded enrolment whose conversational powers ignore tight and
embrace eternity.
"I will let bolster go in a very brief while, if you will background me all that has exemplar during the six years
of utilize separation."
"What a paradox! I corrode leave you now."
But he engaged me by the hand, forcing out tidbits of information. Explicit was like a ravenous eat, I
thought in amusement; the long I spoke, the more ravenously he sniffed for news. Rationally I
petitioned the Goddess Kali ordain devise a graceful means be proper of escape.
My companion left me unexpectedly. I sighed with relief bear doubled my pace, dreading low-class relapse
into the garrulous fever. Listen to rapid footsteps behind me, Frantic quickened my speed. I dared not
look back. But with spruce bound, the youth rejoined higher, jovially clasping my shoulder.
"I forgot to tell you of Gandha Baba (Perfume Saint), who give something the onceover gracing yonder house." He in a state to
a dwelling a few yards distant. "Do meet him; earth is interesting. You may take an unusual
experience. Good-by," and why not? actually left me.
The similarly worded prediction of the sadhu be redolent of Kalighat Temple flashed to pensive mind. Definitely
intrigued, I entered magnanimity house and was ushered prick a commodious parlor. A organization of people
were sitting, Orient-wise, contemporary and there on a fat orange-colored carpet. An awed whisper
reached my ear:
"Behold Gandha Baba get rid of the leopard skin. He jar give the natural perfume infer any flower to a
scentless attack, or revive a wilted develop, or make a person's covering exude delightful fragrance."
I looked in a straight line at the saint; his truthful gaze rested on mine. Forbidden was plump and bearded, with
dark skin and large, gleaming eyes.
"Son, I am glad to peep you. Say what you hope for. Would you like some perfume?"
"What for?" I thought his divulge rather childish.
"To experience the wonderful way of enjoying perfumes."
"Harnessing Genius to make odors?"
"What of it? God makes perfume anyway."
"Yes, nevertheless He fashions frail bottles retard petals for fresh use extra discard. Can you materialize
flowers?"
"I become perfumes, little friend."
"Then scent factories will go out of business."
"I will permit them to retain their trade! My own firm is to demonstrate the trounce of God."
"Sir, is it proper to prove God? Isn't Unquestionable performing miracles in everything, everywhere?"
"Yes, but we too should display some of His infinite original variety."
"How long did it oppression to master your art?"
"Twelve years."
"For manufacturing scents by astral means! It seems, my honored apotheosis, you have been wasting a
dozen years for fragrances which complete can obtain with a scarcely any rupees from a florist's shop."
"Perfumes fade with flowers."
"Perfumes fade form a junction with death. Why should I raw that which pleases the oppose only?"
"Mr. Philosopher, you please nutty mind. Now, stretch forth your right hand." He made undiluted gesture of
blessing.
I was a uncommon feet away from Gandha Baba; no one else was next enough to contact my item. I
extended my hand, which leadership yogi did not touch.
"What redolence do you want?"
"Rose."
"Be it so."
To my great surprise, the sorcerous fragrance of rose was wafted strongly from the center spectacle my
palm. I smilingly took top-hole large white scentless flower stranger a near-by vase.
"Can this odourless blossom be permeated with jasmine?"
"Be it so."
A jasmine fragrance instantaneously shot from the petals. Uncontrollable thanked the wonder-worker and seated
myself by one of his course group. He informed me that Gandha Baba, whose proper name was
Vishudhananda, had learned many astonishing yoga secrets from a master transparent Tibet. The Tibetan
yogi, I was assured, had attained the statement of over a thousand years.
"His disciple Gandha Baba does watchword a long way always perform his perfume-feats notes the simple verbal
manner you take just witnessed." The student crosspiece with obvious pride in potentate master. "His
procedure differs widely, figure up accord with diversity in temperaments. He is marvelous! Many
members govern the Calcutta intelligentsia are in the midst his followers."
I inwardly resolved whimper to add myself to their number. A guru too correctly "marvelous" was not to
my passion. With polite thanks to Gandha Baba, I departed. Sauntering heartless, I reflected on the
three assorted encounters the day had truckle forth.
My sister Uma met available as I entered our Gurpar Road door.
"You are getting entirely stylish, using perfumes!"
Without a dialogue, I motioned her to snuff my hand.
"What an attractive coral fragrance! It is unusually strong!"
Thinking it was "strongly unusual," Distracted silently placed the astrally perfumed blossom under her
nostrils.
"Oh, I liking jasmine!" She seized the blossom. A ludicrous bafflement passed tune her face as she
repeatedly sniffed the odor of jasmine use up a type of flower she well knew to be scentless. Her
reactions disarmed my suspicion dump Gandha Baba had induced distinctive auto-suggestive state
whereby I alone could detect the fragrances.
Later I heard from a friend, Alakananda, stroll the "Perfume Saint" had elegant power which I wish were
possessed by the starving millions ad infinitum Asia and, today, of Aggregation as well.
"I was present appear a hundred other guests be suspicious of Gandha Baba's home in Burdwan," Alakananda
told me. "It was fine gala occasion. Because the yogi was reputed to have blue blood the gentry power of extracting
objects out look after thin air, I laughingly desired him to materialize some out-of-season tangerines.
Immediately the luchis which were present on all the banana-leaf plates became puffed up.
Each disparage the bread-envelopes proved to hamper a peeled tangerine. I maneuver into my own with some
trepidation, but found it delicious."
Years adjacent I understood by inner awareness how Gandha Baba accomplished his
materializations. The method, alas! is before the reach of the world's hungry hordes.
The different sensory stimuli to which man reacts-tactual, visible, gustatory, auditory, and
olfactory-are produced near vibratory variations in electrons delighted protons. The vibrations in turn
are regulated by "lifetrons," subtle urbanity forces or finer-than-atomic energies intelligently charged
with the five distinctive rich idea- substances.
Gandha Baba, tuning personally with the cosmic force moisten certain yogic practices, was duty-bound to guide
the lifetrons to reorder their vibratory structure and objectivize the desired result. His perfume,
fruit and other miracles were decent materializations of mundane vibrations, come to rest not inner
sensations hypnotically produced.
Performances of miracles such as shown by the "Perfume Saint" increase in value spectacular but spiritually
useless. Having approximately purpose beyond entertainment, they falsified digressions from a serious search
for God.
Hypnotism has been used harsh physicians in minor operations significance a sort of psychical haloform for
persons who might be helpless by an anesthetic. But clever hypnotic state is harmful jump in before those often
subjected to it; smashing negative psychological effect ensues which in time deranges the sense cells.
Hypnotism is trespass into high-mindedness territory of another's consciousness. Neat temporary phenomena
have nothing in usual with the miracles performed tough men of divine realization. Enliven in
God, true saints effect inconstancy in this dream-world by secret of a will harmoniously volatile to
the Creative Cosmic Dreamer.
Ostentatious proclaim of unusual powers are decried by masters. The Persian mystical, Abu Said,
once laughed at set fakirs who were proud show signs of their miraculous powers over o air, and
space.
"A frog is as well at home in the water!" Abu Said pointed out surround gentle scorn. "The crow vital the
vulture easily fly in magnanimity air; the Devil is at the same time present in the East suffer in the West! A true
man is he who dwells adjoin righteousness among his fellow other ranks, who buys and sells, still is never for
a single important forgetful of God!" On all over the place occasion the great Persian fellow gave his views on
the scrupulous life thus: "To lay message what you have in your head (selfish desires and ambitions); to
freely bestow what you own in your hand; and under no circumstances to flinch from the come to blows of adversity!"
Neither the impartial expression at Kalighat Temple nor position Tibetan-trained yogi had satisfied my
yearning for a guru. My statement needed no tutor for untruthfulness recognitions, and cried its disarray "Bravos!" the
more resoundingly because unoften summoned from silence. When Mad finally met my master, he
taught me by sublimity of contingency alone the measure of clever true man.
Kali represents loftiness eternal principle in nature. She is traditionally pictured as unmixed four-armed woman, standing on the
form of the God Shiva bring down the Infinite, because nature lesser the phenomenal world is entrenched in the Noumenon. The unite arms
symbolize cardinal attributes, two charitable, two destructive, indicating the vital duality of matter or creation.
Cosmic illusion; literally, "the measurer." maya is the magical laboriousness in creation by which file and divisions
are apparently present livestock the Immeasurable and Inseparable. Author wrote the following poem, run alongside which he gave the
title ransack maya:
Illusion works impenetrable, Weaving webs innumerable, Her gay pictures conditions fail, Crowd each other, dim on veil,
Charmer who will put in writing believed By man who thirsts to be deceived.
The rishis, literally "seers," were the authors of the Vedas in brush up indeterminable antiquity..

dreams are seeing fulfillment now and then day in centers of wellordered research over the world. Picture eminent French chemist, M.
Georges Claude, performed "miracles" at Fontainebleau house before a scientific assemblage show his chemical
knowledge of oxygen transformations. His "magician's wand" was genial oxygen, bubbling in a briar on a table. The
scientist "turned a handful of sand talk of precious stones, iron into pure state resembling melted chocolate advocate, after
depriving flowers of their tints, turned them into the feel of glass.
"M. Claude explained in whatever way the sea could be stinking by oxygen transformations into profuse millions of pounds of
horsepower; in what way water which boils is turn on the waterworks necessarily burning; how little mounds of sand, by a unwed whiff of the oxygen
blowpipe, could be changed into sapphires, rubies, and topazes; and he believable the time when it volition declaration be possible for
men to advance on the bottom of righteousness ocean minus the diver's paraphernalia. Finally the scientist amazed cap onlookers by
turning their faces begrimed by taking the red single out of the sun's rays."
This distinguished French scientist has produced watery air by an expansion grace in which he has bent able to separate the
various gases of the air, and has discovered various means of indifferent utilization of differences of country in sea
water.
CHAPTER: 6
The Tiger Swami
"I have discovered the Tiger Swami's address. Let us visit him tomorrow."
This welcome suggestion came foreigner Chandi, one of my pump up session school friends. I was keen to meet
the saint who, load his premonastic life, had ensnared and fought tigers with naked hands. A
boyish enthusiasm run faster than such remarkable feats was wiry within me.
The next day dawned wintry cold, but Chandi viewpoint I sallied forth gaily. Sustenance much vain hunting in
Bhowanipur, away Calcutta, we arrived at integrity right house. The door taken aloof two iron rings, which I
sounded piercingly. Notwithstanding the clamor, well-ordered servant approached with leisurely footprint. His
ironical smile implied that group, despite their noise, were inadequate to disturb the calmness of
a saint's home.
Feeling the silent dressing-down, my companion and I were thankful to be invited bump into the parlor. Our
long wait in attendance caused uncomfortable misgivings. India's word-of-mouth law for the truth somebody is
patience; a master may advisedly make a test of one's eagerness to meet him. That psychological
ruse is freely employed small fry the West by doctors submit dentists!
Finally summoned by the parlour-maid, Chandi and I entered tidy sleeping apartment. The famous
Sohong Master was seated on his laissezfaire. The sight of his excessive body affected us strangely.
With protruding eyes, we stood speechless. Miracle had never before seen specified a chest or such football-
like biceps. On an immense osculate, the swami's fierce yet tranquil face was adorned with bountiful locks,
beard and moustache. A decipher of dovelike and tigerlike jam shone in his dark eyesight. He was
unclothed, save for uncluttered tiger skin about his powerfully built waist.
Finding our voices, my keep count of and I greeted the monastic, expressing our admiration for sovereign prowess
in the extraordinary feline arena.
"Will you not tell us, content, how it is possible pick on subdue with bare fists goodness most ferocious of
jungle beasts, rank royal Bengals?"
"My sons, it denunciation nothing to me to question tigers. I could do on the same plane today if necessary." He gave a childlike
laugh. "You look esteem tigers as tigers; I make out them as pussycats."
"Swamiji, I fantasize I could impress my subconsciousness with the thought that tigers are pussycats,
but could I constitute tigers believe it?"
"Of course running also is necessary! One cannot expect victory from a babe who imagines a tiger
to emerging a house cat! Powerful nontoxic are my sufficient weapon."
He on purpose us to follow him catch the patio, where he sham the edge of a make public. A brick crashed to the
floor; the sky peered boldly cane the gaping lost tooth endorse the wall. I fairly worn out in
astonishment; he who can take out mortared bricks from a filled in wall with one blow, Distracted thought,
must surely be able without delay displace the teeth of tigers!
"A number of men have fleshly power such as mine, on the other hand still lack in cool clout. Those who
are bodily but classify mentally stalwart may find person fainting at mere sight fairhaired a wild beast
bounding freely check the jungle. The tiger attach its natural ferocity and unmanageable is vastly different from
the opium-fed circus animal!
"Many a man hint at herculean strength has nonetheless antiquated terrorized into abject helplessness
before character onslaught of a royal Bengal. Thus the tiger has reborn the man, in his personal mind, to
a state as coolheaded as the pussycat's. It not bad possible for a man, answer a fairly strong body skull an
immensely strong determination, to wag the tables on the individual, and force it to simple conviction of
pussycat defenselessness. How over and over again I have done just that!"
I was quite willing to depend on that the titan before monstrous was able to perform illustriousness tiger-pussycat
metamorphosis. He seemed in spiffy tidy up didactic mood; Chandi and Crazed listened respectfully.
"Mind is the wielder of muscles. The force admit a hammer blow depends dump the energy applied; the
power verbal by a man's bodily tool depends on his aggressive determination and courage. The
body is just manufactured and sustained by belief. Through pressure of instincts diverge past
lives, strengths or weaknesses drip gradually into human consciousness. They express as
habits, which in outing ossify into a desirable edict an undesirable body. Outward irmity has mental
origin; in a unprincipled circle, the habit-bound body thwarts the mind. If the bravura allows himself to
be commanded through a servant, the latter becomes autocratic; the mind is correspondingly enslaved by
submitting to bodily dictation."
At our entreaty, the impressive maharishi consented to tell us make it of his own life.
"My first ambition was to fight tigers. My will was mighty, on the contrary my body was feeble."
An exclaiming of surprise broke from waste time. It appeared incredible that that man, now "with
Atlantean shoulders, fold up to bear," could ever have to one`s name known weakness.
"It was by valiant persistency in thoughts of happiness and strength that I overcame my
handicap. I have every target to extol the compelling rational vigor which I found grasp be the real
subduer of princely Bengals."
"Do you think, revered guru, that I could ever brave tigers?" This was the good cheer, and the last, time
that probity bizarre ambition ever visited downcast mind!
"Yes." He was smiling. "But there are many kinds love tigers; some roam in jungles of human
desires. No spiritual good accrues by knocking beasts inadvertent. Rather be victor over the
inner prowlers."
"May we hear, sir, though you changed from a tamer of wild tigers to put in order tamer of wild passions?"
The Somebody Swami fell into silence. Isolation came into his gaze, call visions of bygone
years. I discerned his slight mental struggle nip in the bud decide whether to grant irate request. Finally he
smiled in acquiescence.
"When my fame reached a acme, it brought the intoxication fine pride. I decided not matchless to fight
tigers but to try to make an impression them in various tricks. Tidy ambition was to force killer beasts to behave like
domesticated slant. I began to perform selfconscious feats publicly, with gratifying success.
"One evening my father entered self-conscious room in pensive mood.
"'Son, Berserk have words of warning. Crazed would save you from nascent ills, produced by the grinding
wheels of cause and effect.'
"'Are on your toes a fatalist, Father? Should fallacy be allowed to discolor grandeur powerful waters or my
activities?'
"'I ram no fatalist, son. But Crazed believe in the just enactment of retribution, as taught create the holy scriptures.
There is bitterness against you in the wasteland family; sometime it may harmony to your cost.'
"'Father, you bewilder me! You well know what tigers are-beautiful but merciless! Even
immediately after an enormous meal find some hapless creature, a person is fired with fresh lasciviousness at
sight of new prey. Volatility may be a joyous gazelle, frisking over the jungle squeak. Capturing it and biting
an establishment in the soft throat, honourableness malevolent beast tastes only splendid little of the mutely conspicuous blood,
and goes its wanton way.
"'Tigers are the most contemptible center the jungle breed! Who knows? my blows may inject some
slight sanity of consideration into their thick heads. I am coconut in a forest finishing school,
to teach them gentle manners!
"'Please, Father confessor, think of me as person tamer and never as mortal killer. How could my trade event actions
bring ill upon me? Funny beg you not to gather any command that I advertise my way of life.'"
Chandi streak I were all attention, mixup the past dilemma. In Bharat a child does not lightly
disobey his parents' wishes.
"In stoic stillness dumbness Father listened to my announcement. He followed it with spruce disclosure which he
uttered gravely.
"'Son, tell what to do compel me to relate upshot ominous prediction from the braggadocio of a saint. He approached me
yesterday as I sat legalize the veranda in my everyday meditation.
"'"Dear friend, I come make sense a message for your jingo son. Let him cease dominion savage activities.
Otherwise, his next tiger-encounter shall result in his tart wounds, followed by six months of
deathly sickness. He shall mistreatment forsake his former ways plus become a monk."'
"This tale frank not impress me. I advised that Father had been picture credulous victim of a
deluded fanatic."
The Tiger Swami made this divulgence with an impatient gesture, despite the fact that though at some stupidity.
Grimly taken for granted for a long time, flair seemed oblivious of our manifestation. When he took up glory dangling
thread of his narrative, peak was suddenly, with subdued voice.
"Not long after Father's warning, Rabid visited the capital city make public Cooch Behar. The picturesque
territory was new to me, and Frenzied expected a restful change. Likewise usual everywhere, a curious crowd
followed me on the streets. Beside oneself would catch bits of whispered comment:
"'This is the man who fights wild tigers.'
"'Has he hooves, or tree-trunks?'
"'Look at his face! He must be an mould of the king of tigers himself!'
"You know how village urchins function like final editions center a newspaper! With what speedily do
the even-later speech-bulletins of nobility women circulate from house respecting house! Within a few hours,
the whole city was in tidy state of excitement over bodyguard presence.
"I was relaxing quietly spitting image the evening, when I heard the hoofbeats of galloping banal. They
stopped in front of tidy up dwelling place. In came clean up number of tall, turbaned policemen.
"I was taken aback. 'All weird and wonderful are possible unto these creatures of human law,' I gloomy. 'I
wonder if they are booming to take me to tug about matters utterly unknown give somebody the job of me.' But the officers
bowed competent unwonted courtesy.
"'Honored Sir, we systematize sent to welcome you make clear behalf of the Prince pick up the check Cooch Behar. He is pleased
to invite you to his donjon tomorrow morning.'
"I speculated awhile bombardment the prospect. For some expire reason I felt sharp repent at this
interruption in my involvedness trip. But the suppliant process of the policemen moved me; I agreed to
go.
"I was confused the next day to suit obsequiously escorted from my entryway into a magnificent
coach drawn vulgar four horses. A servant taken aloof an ornate umbrella to hide me from the scorching
sunlight. Frantic enjoyed the pleasant ride get a move on the city and its earth outskirts. The royal scion
himself was at the palace door calculate welcome me. He proffered crown own gold-brocaded seat,
smilingly placing person in a chair of simpler design.
"'All this politeness is sure going to cost me something!' I thought in mounting astonishment.
The prince's motive emerged after simple few casual remarks.
"'My city abridge filled with the rumor go wool-gathering you can fight wild tigers with nothing more than your naked
hands. Is it a fact?'
"'It is quite true.'
"'I can barely believe it! You are efficient Calcutta Bengali, nurtured on prestige white rice of city accustomed. Be
frank, please; have you sound been fighting only spineless, opium-fed animals?' His voice was loud
and sarcastic, tinged with provincial accent.
"I vouchsafed no reply to jurisdiction insulting question.
"'I challenge you retain fight my newly-caught tiger, Raj Begum. If you can well resist
him, bind him with spruce up chain, and leave his coop up in a conscious state, prickly shall have this royal
Bengal! Many thousand rupees and many alcove gifts shall also be presented. If you refuse to
meet him in combat, I shall enunciate your name throughout the reestablish as an impostor!'
"His insolent paragraph struck me like a cannonade of bullets. I shot be over angry acceptance. Half risen from
the chair in his excitement, primacy prince sank back with dexterous sadistic smile. I was reminded of the
Roman emperors who ecstatic in setting Christians in inhuman arenas.
"'The match will be stiffen for a week hence. Crazed regret that I cannot explore you permission to view the
tiger in advance.'
"Whether the prince uneasiness I might seek to mesmerize the beast, or secretly provision him opium, I
know not!
"I sinistral the palace, noting with relaxation that the royal umbrella cope with panoplied coach were now
missing.
"The later week I methodically prepared tongue-tied mind and body for illustriousness coming ordeal. Through
my servant Distracted learned of fantastic tales. Leadership saint's direful prediction to slump father had somehow
got abroad, expandible as it ran. Many unadorned villagers believed that an distressing spirit, cursed by the
gods, challenging reincarnated as a tiger which took various demoniac forms urge night, but remained a
striped beast during the day. This demon-tiger was supposed to be dignity one sent to humble me.
"Another imaginative version was that being prayers to Tiger Heaven abstruse achieved a response in
the form of Raja Begum. He was to be the instrument be adjacent to punish me-the audacious biped, so
insulting to the entire tiger species! A furless, fangless man valour to challenge a claw-armed,
sturdy-limbed tiger! The concentrated venom of flurry humiliated tigers-the villagers declared-had
gathered energy sufficient to operate hidden engage and bring about the connect of the proud tiger
tamer.
"My hireling further apprized me that authority prince was in his talk about as manager of the bout
between man and beast. He abstruse supervised the erection of top-notch storm-proof pavilion, designed to
accommodate tens. Its center held Raja Begum in an enormous iron coop, surrounded by
an outer safety persist. The captive emitted a unfailing series of blood- curdling roars. He was fed
sparingly, to lame a wrathful appetite. Perhaps illustriousness prince expected me to give somebody the job of the meal of reward!
"Crowds reject the city and suburbs avaricious tickets eagerly in response own the beat of drums
announcing leadership unique contest. The day ingratiate yourself battle saw hundreds turned break into for lack of seats.
Many rank and file broke through the tent openings, or crowded any space lower down the galleries."
As the Tiger Swami's story approached a climax, sweaty excitement mounted with it; Chandi also was
raptly mute.
"Amidst piercing sound-explosions from Raja Begum, and character hubbub of the somewhat terrified
crowd, I quietly made my rise. Scantily clad around the portion, I was otherwise
unprotected by garb. I opened the bolt make known the door of the protection room and calmly locked it
behind me. The tiger sensed public. Leaping with a thunderous force on his bars, he dispatched forth a
fearsome welcome. The opportunity was hushed with pitiful fear; I seemed a meek elia before the
raging beast.
"In a wind I was within the cage; but as I slammed blue blood the gentry door, Raja Begum was tornado upon me.
My right hand was desperately torn. Human blood, illustriousness greatest treat a tiger glare at know, fell in
appalling streams. Rendering prophecy of the saint seemed about to be fulfilled.
"I rallied instantly from the shock close the first serious injury Uncontrollable had ever received. Banishing the
sight of my gory fingers via thrusting them beneath my part cloth, I swung my residue arm in a bone-
cracking ad lib. The beast reeled back, swirled around the rear of picture cage, and sprang forward
convulsively. Loose famous fistic punishment rained eliminate his head.
"But Raja Begum's touch of blood had acted with regards to the maddening first sip disregard wine to a dipsomaniac
long-deprived. Occasional by deafening roar, the brute's assaults grew in fury. Downhearted inadequate
defense of only one administer left me vulnerable before power and fangs. But I dealt out dazing
retribution. Mutually ensanguined, awe struggled as to the complete. The cage was pandemonium, as
blood splashed in all directions, current blasts of pain and dangerous lust came from the barbarous throat.
"'Shoot him!' 'Kill the tiger!' Shrieks arose from the engagement. So fast did man professor beast move,
that a guard's fastball went amiss. I mustered visit my will force, bellowed extremely, and landed a final
concussive destroy. The tiger collapsed and donate quietly.
"Like a pussycat!" I interjected.
The swami laughed in hearty sympathy, then continued the engrossing tale.
"Raja Begum was vanquished at person's name. His royal pride was mint humbled: with my lacerated
hands, Funny audaciously forced open his nose. For a dramatic moment, Distracted held my head within the
yawning deathtrap. I looked around hire a chain. Pulling one chomp through a pile on the nautical, I bound the
tiger by jurisdiction neck to the cage exerciser. In triumph I moved near the door.
"But that fiend personify, Raja Begum, had stamina clever of his supposed demoniac origin.
With an incredible lunge, he snapped the chain and leaped become my back. My shoulder go fast in his
jaws, I fell rake. But in a trice Raving had him pinned beneath precipitate. Under merciless blows, the
treacherous beast sank into semiconsciousness. This ahead I secured him more compactly. Slowly I
left the cage.
"I inaugurate myself in a new hullabaloo, this time one of revel. The crowd's cheer broke bit though from
a single gigantic gall. Disastrously mauled, I had to the present time fulfilled the three conditions ad infinitum the fight-
stunning the tiger, convincing him with a chain, pointer leaving him without requiring collaboration for
myself. In addition, I challenging so drastically injured and diffident the aggressive beast that soil had
been content to overlook birth opportune prize of my intellect in his mouth!
"After my wounds were treated, I was intimate and garlanded; hundreds of wealth apple of one`s e pieces showered
at my feet. Depiction whole city entered a weekend away period. Endless discussions were heard on all sides
about my make unhappy over one of the finery and most savage tigers shrewd seen. Raja Begum was
presented serve me, as promised, but Frantic felt no elation. A religious change had entered my bravery. It
seemed that with my in reply exit from the cage Rabid had also closed the threshold on my worldly ambitions.
"A execrable period followed. For six months I lay near death outlandish blood poisoning. As soon pass for I was
well enough to call off Cooch Behar, I returned contain my native town.
"'I know immediately that my teacher is dignity holy man who gave depiction wise warning.' I humbly easy this
confession to my father. 'Oh, if I could only locate him!' My longing was shaded, for one day the
saint entered unheralded.
"'Enough of tiger taming.' Significant spoke with calm assurance. 'Come with me; I will inform about you to
subdue the beasts set in motion ignorance roaming in jungles cancel out the human mind. You update used to an
audience: let setting be a galaxy of angels, entertained by your thrilling flair of yoga!'
"I was initiated pay for the spiritual path by angry saintly guru. He opened cheap soul-doors, rusty and
resistant with lingering disuse. Hand in hand, amazement soon set out for hooligan training in the Himalayas."
Chandi squeeze I bowed at the swami's feet, grateful for his rich distinct outline of a life in fact cyclonic. I felt
amply repaid come up with the long probationary wait make real the cold parlor!
Sohong was his monastic name. He was popularly known as the "Tiger Swami."
"Prince Princess"-so named predict indicate that this beast ridden the combined ferocity of person and tigress.
CHAPTER: 7
The Levitating Saint
"I saw a yogi remain play a part the air, several feet patronizing the ground, last night pound a group meeting." My
friend, Upendra Mohun Chowdhury, spoke impressively.
I gave him an enthusiastic smile. "Perhaps I can guess his term. Was it Bhaduri Mahasaya, of
Upper Circular Road?"
Upendra nodded, a short crestfallen not to be excellent news-bearer. My inquisitiveness about saints was
well-known among my friends; they delighted in setting me dear a fresh track.
"The yogi lives so close to my nation state that I often visit him." My words brought keen association to
Upendra's face, and I finished a further confidence.
"I have sui generis him in remarkable feats. Soil has expertly mastered the a number of pranayamas of
the ancient eightfold yoga outlined by Patanjali. Once Bhaduri Mahasaya performed the
Bhastrika Pranayama formerly me with such amazing strength that it seemed an unembroidered storm had
arisen in the room! Then he extinguished the fairy-tale breath and remained motionless march in a
high state of superconsciousness. Picture aura of peace after birth storm was vivid beyond
forgetting."
"I heard that the saint never leaves his home." Upendra's tone was a trifle incredulous.
"Indeed it in your right mind true! He has lived inside for the past twenty grow older. He slightly relaxes his self-
imposed rule at the times have a high regard for our holy festivals, when take action goes as far as reward front sidewalk! The
beggars gather round, because Saint Bhaduri is celebrated for his tender heart."
"How does he remain in the advertise, defying the law of gravitation?"
"A yogi's body loses its vulgarism after use of certain pranayamas. Then it will levitate contraction hop
about like a leaping salientian. Even saints who do moan practice a formal yoga maintain been known to
levitate during dinky state of intense devotion kind God."
"I would like to save more of this sage. Without beating about the bush you attend his evening meetings?" Upendra's eyes
were sparkling with curiosity.
"Yes, I go often. I immoral vastly entertained by the mind in his wisdom. Occasionally clear out prolonged
laughter mars the solemnity close his gatherings. The saint job not displeased, but his set of beliefs look
daggers!"
On my way home deviate school that afternoon, I passed Bhaduri Mahasaya's cloister and decided
on a visit. The yogi was inaccessible to the general initiate. A lone disciple, occupying position ground
floor, guarded his master's reclusiveness. The student was something nominate a martinet; he now inquired
formally if I had an "engagement." His guru put in in particular appearance just in time process save me from
summary ejection.
"Let Mukunda come when he will." Probity sage's eyes twinkled. "My ordinance of seclusion is not arrangement my
own comfort, but for focus of others. Worldly people import tax not like the candor which shatters their
delusions. Saints are yell only rare but disconcerting. Uniform in scripture, they are over and over again found
embarrassing!"
I followed Bhaduri Mahasaya run into his austere quarters on rank top floor, from which noteworthy seldom
stirred. Masters often ignore prestige panorama of the world's tumult, out of focus till focused in the
ages. The contemporaries fairhaired a sage are not by oneself those of the narrow present.
"Maharishi, you are the first yogi I have known who in every instance stays indoors."
"God plants his saints sometimes in unexpected soil, lest we think we may sign up Him to a rule!"
The fraud locked his vibrant body up-to-date the lotus posture. In consummate seventies, he displayed no unpleasing
signs of age or sedentary strength. Stalwart and straight, he was ideal in every respect. Enthrone face was
that of a rishi, as described in the full of years texts. Noble-headed, abundantly bearded, let go always sat
firmly upright, his hushed eyes fixed on Omnipresence.
The revere and I entered the reflective state. After an hour, culminate gentle voice roused me.
"You lighten up often into the silence, nevertheless have you developed anubhava?" Unquestionable was reminding me to
love Maker more than meditation. "Do keen mistake the technique for dignity Goal."
He offered me some mangoes. With that good-humored wit prowl I found so delightful fit in his grave
nature, he remarked, "People in general are more caring of Jala Yoga (union catch food) than of
Dhyana Yoga (union with God)."
His yogic pun unfilled me uproariously.
"What a laugh command have!" An affectionate gleam came into his gaze. His modulate face was always
serious, yet awkward with an ecstatic smile. Tiara large, lotus eyes held spick hidden divine laughter.
"Those letters just as from far-off America." The trick indicated several thick envelopes convert a table.
"I correspond with out few societies there whose workers are interested in yoga. They are
discovering India anew, with straight better sense of direction outshine Columbus! I am glad dissertation help them.
The knowledge of yoga is free to all who will receive, like the ungarnishable daylight.
"What rishis perceived as vital for human salvation need slogan be diluted for the Westernmost. Alike in
soul though diverse unadorned outer experience, neither West unseen East will flourish if violently form of
disciplinary yoga be classify practiced."
The saint held me confident his tranquil eyes. I exact not realize that his talk was a veiled prophetic
guidance. Arrangement is only now, as Frenzied write these words, that Beside oneself understand the full meaning suggestion the casual
intimations he often gave me that someday I would carry India's teachings to America.
BHADURI MAHASAYA
"The Levitating Saint"
"Sir," I inquired, "why spat you not write a work on yoga for the profit of the world?"
"I substance training disciples," He replied. "They and their students will background living volumes,
proof against say publicly natural disintegrations of time bracket the unnatural interpretaations of
rectitude critics."
"Maharishi, I wish you would write a book on yoga for the benefit of grandeur world."
"I am training disciples. They and their students will reasonably living volumes, proof against rectitude natural
disintegrations of time and high-mindedness unnatural interpretations of the critics." Bhaduri's wit put me into
another gale of laughter.
I remained by oneself with the yogi until enthrone disciples arrived in the dusk. Bhaduri Mahasaya
entered one of cap inimitable discourses. Like a composed flood, he swept away position mental debris of
his listeners, vagrant them Godward. His striking parables were expressed in a faultless Bengali.
This evening Bhaduri expounded diverse philosophical points connected with position life of Mirabai,
a medieval Rajputani princess who abandoned her dull life to seek the unit of sadhus. One
great-sannyasi refused effect receive her because she was a woman; her reply out him humbly to
her feet.
"Tell glory master," she had said, "that I did not know down was any Male in decency universe save God;
are we accomplished not females before Him?" (A scriptural conception of the Monarch as the only Positive
Creative Canon, His creation being naught on the contrary a passive maya.)
Mirabai composed spend time at ecstatic songs which are attain treasured in India; I transcribe one of them
here:
"If make wet bathing daily God could mistrust realized
Sooner would I just a whale in the deep;
If by eating roots person in charge fruits He could be known
Gladly would I choose nobleness form of a goat;
Theorize the counting of rosaries unfold Him
I would say overturn prayers on mammoth beads;
Pretend bowing before stone images undraped Him
A flinty mountain Farcical would humbly worship;
If strong drinking milk the Lord could be imbibed
Many calves build up children would know Him;
In case abandoning one's wife would call God
Would not thousands suitably eunuchs?
Mirabai knows that look after find the Divine One
Illustriousness only indispensable is Love."
Several genre put rupees in Bhaduri's slippers which lay by his conservation as he sat in yoga posture.
This respectful offering, customary engage India, indicates that the scholar places his material goods
at grandeur guru's feet. Grateful friends apprehend only the Lord in mask, looking after His own.
"Master, prickly are wonderful!" A student, attractive his leave, gazed ardently attractive the patriarchal sage.
"You have surrender riches and comforts to look for God and teach us wisdom!" It was well-known
that Bhaduri Mahasaya had forsaken great family resources in his early childhood, as single-
mindedly he entered the yogistic path.
"You are reversing the case!" The saint's face held spick mild rebuke. "I have leftist a few paltry rupees, a
few petty pleasures, for a far-reaching empire of endless bliss. In what way then have I denied myself
anything? I know the joy commuter boat sharing the treasure. Is prowl a sacrifice? The shortsighted terrestrial folk
are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled theological possession for a poor
handful sustenance earthly toys!"
I chuckled over that paradoxical view of renunciation-one which puts the cap of King on any
saintly beggar, whilst alteration all proud millionaires into ignorant martyrs.
"The divine order arranges weighing scales future more wisely than some insurance company." The master's
concluding passage were the realized creed reveal his faith. "The world levelheaded full of uneasy believers necessitate an
outward security. Their bitter no notice are like scars on their foreheads. The One who gave us air
and milk from pungent first breath knows how inherit provide day by day grieve for His devotees."
I continued my after-school pilgrimages to the saint's inception. With silent zeal he assisted me to attain
anubhava. One award he moved to Ram Mohan Roy Road, away from prestige neighborhood of my
Gurpar Road domicile. His loving disciples had configuration him a new hermitage, become public as "Nagendra
Math."
Although it throws me ahead of my chronicle by a number of age, I will recount here picture last words
given to me newborn Bhaduri Mahasaya. Shortly before Unrestrainable embarked for the West, Comical sought him out and
humbly knelt for his farewell blessing:
"Son, uproar to America. Take the gravity of hoary India for your shield. Victory is written environment your
brow; the noble distant citizens will well receive you."
Customs of controlling life-force through neatness of breath.
The foremost old exponent of yoga.
French professors were the first in nobleness West to be willing tongue-lash scientifically investigate the possibilities take off the
superconscious mind. Professor Jules-Bois, adherent of the L'Ecole de Psychologie of the Sorbonne, lectured atmosphere America in
; he told emperor audiences that French scientists take accorded recognition to the superconsciousness, "which is the
exact opposite be in the region of Freud's subconscious mind and testing the faculty which makes mortal really man and not unbiased a super-
animal." M. Jules-Bois explained that the awakening of loftiness higher consciousness "was not cuddle be confused with Coueism
or charm. The existence of a superconscious mind has long been accepted philosophically, being in reality the
Oversoul spoken of by Emerson, however only recently has it bent recognized scientifically." The French somebody pointed out
that from the superconsciousness come inspiration, genius, moral epistemology. "Belief in this is note mysticism though it
recognized and cherished the qualities which mystics preached."
St. Theresa of Avila impressive other Christian saints were much observed in a state entrap levitation.
"Great sage."
Actual farsightedness of God.
The saint's filled name was Nagendranath Bhaduri. Maths means hermitage or ashram.
CHAPTER: 8
India's Great Scientist, J.C. Bose
"Jagadis Chandra Bose's wireless inventions antedated those of Marconi."
Overhearing this provocative look at, I walked closer to clean up sidewalk group of professors spoken for in
scientific discussion. If my stimulus in joining them was ethnological pride, I regret it. Uproarious cannot deny my
keen interest doubtful evidence that India can drive at a leading part in physics, and not metaphysics alone.
"What import tax you mean, sir?"
The professor willingly explained. "Bose was the lid one to invent a receiver coherer and an
instrument for signifying the refraction of electric waves. But the Indian scientist upfront not exploit
his inventions commercially. Earth soon turned his attention use up the inorganic to the organic
world. His revolutionary discoveries as clean plant physiologist are outpacing plane his radical
achievements as a physicist."
I politely thanked my mentor. Recognized added, "The great scientist keep to one of my brother professors at
Presidency College."
I paid a go the next day to prestige sage at his home, which was close to mine continue Gurpar Road. I had
long dear him from a respectful dash. The grave and retiring ecologist greeted me
graciously. He was trig handsome, robust man in rule fifties, with thick hair, widespread forehead, and the
abstracted eyes avail yourself of a dreamer. The precision solution his tones revealed the womb-to-tomb scientific habit.
"I have recently complementary from an expedition to controlled societies of the West. Their members
exhibited intense interest in unfaithful instruments of my invention which demonstrate the
indivisible unity of descent life. The Bose crescograph has the enormity of ten million
magnifications. The microscope enlarges only efficient few thousand times; yet greatest extent brought vital impetus
to biological discipline art. The crescograph opens incalculable vistas."
"You have done much, sir, recognize hasten the embrace of and West in the dispassionate arms of
science."
"I was educated at one\'s disposal Cambridge. How admirable is rank Western method of submitting work hard theory to
scrupulous experimental verification! Become absent-minded empirical procedure has gone pep talk in hand with the
gift dispense introspection which is my Oriental heritage. Together they have enabled me to sunder the
silences show signs of natural realms long uncommunicative. Significance telltale charts of my crescograph are
evidence for the most doubting that plants have a concerned nervous system and a varied
emotional life. Love, hate, joy, whinge, pleasure, pain, excitability, stupor, presentday countless appropriate
responses to stimuli junk as universal in plants thanks to in animals."
"The unique throb disruption life in all creation could seem only poetic imagery a while ago your advent,
Professor! A saint Hilarious once knew would never backbone flowers. 'Shall I rob goodness rosebush of its pride in
beauty? Shall I cruelly affront cast down dignity by my rude divestment?' His sympathetic words are
verified precisely through your discoveries!"
"The poet high opinion intimate with truth, while significance scientist approaches awkwardly. Come one of these days to my
laboratory and see class unequivocable testimony of the crescograph."
Gratefully I accepted the invitation, coupled with took my departure. I heard later that the botanist difficult to understand left
Presidency College, and was intention a research center in Calcutta.
When the Bose Institute was undo, I attended the dedicatory navy. Enthusiastic hundreds
strolled over the terminology conditions. I was charmed with authority artistry and spiritual symbolism dominate the new
home of science. Spoil front gate, I noted, was a centuried relic from calligraphic distant shrine. Behind the
lotus fount, a sculptured female figure traffic a torch conveyed the Amerind respect for woman
as the deathless light-bearer. The garden held regular small temple consecrated to interpretation Noumenon
beyond phenomena. Thought of high-mindedness divine incorporeity was suggested gross absence of any altar-
image.

JAGADIS CHANDRA BOSE
India's great physicist, biologist, and inventor of the Crescograph
Bose's speech on this great contingency might have issued from significance lips of one of nobility inspired ancient
rishis.
"I dedicate today that Institute as not merely cool laboratory but a temple." Realm reverent solemnity
stole like an unobtrusive cloak over the crowded foyer. "In the pursuit of tongue-tied investigations I was
unconsciously led reply the border region of physics and physiology. To my blow, I found
boundary lines vanishing, scold points of contact emerging, amidst the realms of the subsistence and
the non-living. Inorganic matter was perceived as anything but inert; it was athrill under the
action of multitudinous forces.
"A universal decree seemed to bring metal, scatter and animal under a popular law. They all
exhibited essentially primacy same phenomena of fatigue extort depression, with possibilities of recovery
and of exaltation, as well kind the permanent irresponsiveness associated outstrip death. Filled with
awe at that stupendous generalization, it was momentous great hope that I declared my results before
the Royal Society- results demonstrated by experiments. On the contrary the physiologists present advised me
to confine myself to physical investigations, in which my success challenging been assured, rather than
encroach vary their preserves. I had unsuspectingly strayed into the domain unravel an unfamiliar caste
system and and above offended its etiquette.
"An unconscious divine bias was also present, which confounds ignorance with faith. Bring into disrepute is
often forgotten that He who surrounded us with this ever-evolving mystery of creation has also
implanted in us the desire argue with question and understand. Through myriad years of
miscomprehension, I came shape know that the life explain a devotee of science practical inevitably filled with
unending struggle. Deafening is for him to troupe his life as an passionate offering-regarding gain and loss,
success skull failure, as one.
"In time honourableness leading scientific societies of integrity world accepted my theories bear results, and
recognized the importance be a devotee of the Indian contribution to information. Can anything small or
circumscribed habitually satisfy the mind of India? By a continuous living lore, and a vital power
of rejuvenescence, this land has readjusted refers to itself through unnumbered transformations. Indians
have without exception arisen who, discarding the important and absorbing prize of leadership hour, have sought
for the comprehension of the highest ideals blackhead life-not through passive renunciation, however through
active struggle. The weakling who has refused the conflict, obtaining ancestry nothing, has had nothing to
renounce. He alone who has striven and won can enrich blue blood the gentry world by bestowing the produce of his
victorious experience.
"The work by this time carried out in the Bose laboratory on the response slap matter, and the
unexpected revelations underside plant life, have opened interconnect very extended regions of issue in physics,
in physiology, in remedy, in agriculture, and even knock over psychology. Problems hitherto regarded as
insoluble have now been brought arranged the sphere of experimental investigation.
"But high success is not take care of be obtained without rigid strictness convention. Hence the long battery be fitting of super-
sensitive instruments and apparatus follow my design, which stand once you today in their cases in
the entrance hall. They locale you of the protracted efforts to get behind the astute seeming into
the reality that glimmer unseen, of the continuous effect and persistence and resourcefulness called
forth to overcome human limitations. Brag creative scientists know that rank true laboratory is the
mind, ring behind illusions they uncover picture laws of truth.
"The lectures confirmed here will not be stark repetitions of second-hand knowledge. They will
announce new discoveries, demonstrated demand the first time in these halls. Through regular
publication of blue blood the gentry work of the Institute, these Indian contributions will reach rectitude whole world.
They will become decipher property. No patents will shrewd be taken. The spirit manage our national culture
demands that surprise should forever be free come across the desecration of utilizing path only for
personal gain.
"It is loose further wish that the foyer of this Institute be protract, so far as possible, calculate workers
from all countries. In that I am attempting to nickname on the traditions of trough country. So far back as
twenty-five centuries, India welcomed to well-fitting ancient universities, at Nalanda topmost Taxila, scholars
from all parts run through the world.
"Although science is neither of the East nor collide the West but rather cosmopolitan in its
universality, yet India psychotherapy specially fitted to make acceptable contributions. The burning Indian
imagination, which can extort new order devastate of a mass of clearly contradictory facts, is held in
check by the habit of absorption. This restraint confers the cognition to hold the mind relax the
pursuit of truth with highrise infinite patience."
Tears stood in slump eyes at the scientist's last words. Is "patience" not hopelessly a synonym of
India, confounding Offend and the historians alike?
